Conversations with April Kirkwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Kirkwood

Hi April, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Raised in the tranquil suburbs of Youngstown, Ohio during the early 60s, my childhood was a tapestry woven with resilience, love, and a touch of rebellion. I lived with my divorced mother in my grandparents’ bustling household, their chicken farm providing a unique backdrop to my formative years. Surrounded by aunts and uncles, I was nurtured under their many watchful eyes, growing into a spiritually grounded and intellectually curious young girl. My spirit, though tenderly protected, was given just enough freedom to let my inner spitfire shine.

Despite the warmth of family, my childhood was not without its challenges. My mother’s mental health struggles kept us tethered close to home, shaping a life where venturing too far felt impossible. Yet, within these confines, I pursued education fervently, achieving two master’s degrees and laying a foundation for the person I would become.

As I navigated adulthood, my path took an unexpected turn when the universe called me to care for my partner, Ralph. His passing left me alone for the first time, triggering an emotional darkness that led me on a profound journey of self-discovery. I sought healing across continents, bridging Eastern and Western philosophies, and slowly, the sun began to shine within me once more.

Out of the blue, an opportunity to be a contestant on the first Golden Bachelor show arrived, awakening parts of me I had long forgotten. This experience, coupled with my work as a mental health therapist and social media influencer, has opened a new chapter in my life—one filled with passion, growth, and a deep sense of purpose.

Today, I start each day with a renewed sense of joy and curiosity, eager to embrace whatever comes next. This is my story—a testament to resilience, the power of healing, and the unending journey of self-discovery.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life, when lived with truth and integrity, is never easy. My journey mirrors that of many others, where the names, dates, and specific challenges vary, but the fundamental lessons of forgiveness, perseverance, and self-acceptance remain constant. From the start, I faced the complexities of a mother grappling with severe mental health issues stemming from childhood trauma, and a father who chose to step away rather than confront his own introspection. These familial dynamics, deeply ingrained in my DNA across generations, shaped much of my early life.

For years, I carried the weight of wanting to heal my mother and earn my father’s approval, unaware of how these subconscious desires influenced every aspect of my journey. Yet, through these struggles, I’ve come to realize that each challenge was perfectly aligned to fulfill my greater purpose: to open the hearts of others.

Now, reflecting on this journey, I see how it has profoundly shaped my perspective on life. It has taught me empathy, resilience, and the importance of embracing one’s true self. My experiences have empowered me to connect with others on a deeper level, recognizing that our shared humanity transcends individual struggles and binds us together in our quest for healing and growth.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My life is my career. We often view our life’s purpose through the lens of specific roles—such as being a mother, doctor, lawyer, nurse, or construction worker. However, these roles are merely the vehicles through which we pursue our true purpose and calling.

For me, my purpose extends beyond any single role. It is integral to my being, as I strive to touch many lives in various capacities, offering what I can at different stages of my life.

My aim is to continuously evolve, fostering environments where people feel special and deserving of self-love, helping them recognize and embrace their true essence.

I specialize in seeing the souls of others as beings of love who are here on this journey with others. There is no rush. There is nothing to feel shame and guilt about. There is only acceptance through my lens.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see the world going through an awakening that many will fear. I hope that if it be my purpose, doors will open to be one of those that assist others to their true state.
