Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Hearn.
Hi Candace, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
When I was younger, my mom placed me in dance classes because I would watch Shirley Temple videos and learn her dances. I continued to dance as I got older and competed on numerous dance teams. I am currently a dance team coach at the school I teach at. Although I was given the opportunity to take dance classes, a lot of my friends could not as their parents could not afford to pay for the dance classes.
I plan to offer affordable dance classes so more students have the opportunity to learn to dance and express their emotions through dance. I also want to use my business to emphasize why education and entrepreneurship are important so my dancers are prepared for what the world has to offer them. After years of searching for a space to teach my dance classes, I found a space and began teaching dance in June 2023, as I began my journey of owning a dance studio.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road.
It took years for me to find a space where I could teach my classes. It is also hard to find dancers to participate in weekly dance classes with the rise of social media dance trends.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a dancer and choreographer. I choreographed for a few shows at Belmont University while I was in college. I specialize in the contemporary dance style which allows me to choreograph dances that bring awareness to social issues.
There was a piece of choreography I created in college where I had each dancer depict how people who survived recent natural disasters at the time were feeling, but the world expects you to keep going like nothing happened. It brought awareness to how we oftentimes need to stop and observe what is going on around us and lend a helping hand.
My dance studio is different from others as I offer classes at reasonable prices so more dancers have access to dance classes.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
As of right now, I am training dancers to begin a competitive dance team through my studio next year. I am searching for dancers of all ages, 3-18, and different levels of dance to prepare them for the 2024-2025 dance competition season.
I am looking to also compose contemporary dance shows to bring awareness to current issues. I am also accepting donations so we can find a permanent space to operate as a successful dance studio equipped with barres, mirrors, Marley dance floors, dance team gear, etc.
