Conversations with Dylan Rand

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Rand

Hi Dylan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a 16 year-old freelance photographer based in Memphis, TN. I am originally from Memphis and attend Crosstown high
immediately after high school I plan on going to college to become a creative director in film. I learned my passion for photography/videography and Content Creator when I didn’t make my high school basketball team, I wanted to find a way be about the sport and photography was my way of doing that. Later that year I became the student basketball social media manager & photographer. My grandad always tells me I need to get a job after school so it might as well be something I love doing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a journey filled with ups and downs. When I first started, I didn’t own a camera and had never taken a photography class—still haven’t! I began taking photos for my high school team using a borrowed camera from the school, despite having no prior experience. I had to learn everything on my own, and once I did, I got pretty good at it.

My first major challenge came when I felt I had mastered the school’s camera and was ready to buy my own. The obstacle was that I didn’t have any money and wasn’t earning any, as I had just started trading photos for pictures of the players. Later that year, I received my first camera from a family member who was a photographer. She upgraded to a new camera and gave me her old one.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, I’m the Creative Director for a signed music artist, Amour Neveah. I oversee the creation of various creative assets, including content for the artist. My responsibilities include directing, recording, and editing all music videos, behind-the-scenes vlogs, and more. My role involves managing the artist’s visual development, ensuring that their look and feel effectively convey the song’s message and emotion to fans, just as they envision it.

For the most part I mostly specialize in sports photography and graphic design. Since January 2022, I’ve been working with a range of people on different projects with making content that keeps me both challenged and inspired on what’s new. My photography is somewhat new. I started taking photos in 2023. My Experience includes high-level sports events, like University of Memphis tennis, football and basketball games and The Dallas Open, where I get to capture the fast-paced action and intensity of live sports. I also photograph corporate events and individual portraits, bringing out authentic moments in professional settings.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey as a photographer and content creator is the value of adaptability. In this field, things can change quickly—whether it’s a shift in creative direction, technical challenges, or unexpected situations during shoots. I haven’t been doing this long, but I’ve learned that things will happen, and the best approach is to find the solution and keep moving forward. Being open to change and willing to learn from each experience has helped me grow and develop my unique style and stand out from other creators.
It’s also taught me to collaborate effectively, as feedback from others can lead to breakthroughs I might not have considered on my own.
