Conversations with India Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to India Johnson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story began in 2018 after an accident that left me with a broken right wrist and left broken hand. While recovering, I attempted to run but due to pain, I was unable to run. Being that I was a long-distance runner and very active I became depressed not being able to exercise.

One of my friends came to visit and bought over a spin bike. I then downloaded an app and started riding daily. Once my cast was removed I began taking spin classes at the downtown YMCA. I attended a class one day and the instructor was ill. I ended up teaching the class. I received a call the next day and was offered a job as a spin instructor. Upon accepting the part-time position, I obtained my certification with Spinning.com.

While working as a part-time instructor, I realized spinning was my passion. I loved being pushed by my students and helping others become the best versions of themselves. Once the Covid number rose the YMCA classes were canceled. I then purchased fifteen commercial spin bikes and decided to teach for myself. I enjoyed being outside as my history of being a long-distance runner.

I decided to hold classes outside to keep us six feet apart but able to continue our need to exercise for our mental and physical health. My passion for running led me to spin and has helped me evolve into a better runner and now I’m able to travel and help others on their journey to a healthier lifestyle.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Any road will have bumps, you have to learn to keep evolving and being flexible. Covid restrictions have definitely been a struggle and have limited our class sizes and the ability to expand into different areas.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed social worker and I work in renal care.

I provide mental health services to those suffering from mental health illnesses. I use exercise as a means of self-care for me. Running and cycling are my escape. My job can be physically and mentally draining. Being a therapist makes me a great spin instructor.

I have skills and training in motivating others. I am very energetic and engaging. I want my clients like my patients to leave the room feeling enthusiastic and hopeful about changing their lives.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I feel the fitness industry is definitely growing and will continue over the next five years.

I feel the future of the industry will become digital, Since the pandemic, the fitness industry has to adapt to the new norm of virtual. I believe more individuals are moving toward at-home workouts utilizing health and fitness apps.

In light of the new digital fitness, I believe gyms need to adapt to the social area of fitness.
