Conversations with Indya Payne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Indya Payne.

Hi Indya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hi! My name is Indya Payne. I’m a Professional Makeup Artist, Fashion Model, and Beauty/Fashion Content Creator. I like to say I’m a very versatile human being (jack of all trades) because I’ve always been interested in doing EVERYTHING. I love dipping my toes into different projects because of how creative I know I can be. Since I was in elementary, I was a very creative child who loved the arts! In elementary school, I was on the dance team and art club! I also was in art classes during my middle & high school years!

I was very shy growing up so I didn’t have a lot of friends so I was always finding new things to do! I used to always watch makeup tutorials & fashion videos on YouTube and practice different looks on myself! I was always practicing makeup on myself and tapping into my creative, artistic side of me! High school was the time I first found out about Instagram so instantly I was in love with taking pictures of myself with my different makeup looks and outfits I wore to school! I fell in love with being in front of the camera! I always knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life! After graduating high school, I went straight into beginning my business as a freelance makeup artist with my first client in 2019. Being a makeup artist was always something I was interested in becoming because I loved how creative I can be with makeup and transform clients and myself into whatever “alter ego” my clients/me wanted to be that day which I adored!

I attended Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School as well and graduated in 2020! I wanted to take a different route so I began modeling later on in 202o. I decided to model because I knew I always wanted to be in front of the camera, to show people what I had to offer, and it was another form of art to me and another way to showcase my artistic side and showcase my confidence. I started by networking with different models and photographers, building my modeling portfolio, and taking my social media seriously! I was building my social media audience by providing content consistently which encourage other girls to tap into it as well and I was able to receive opportunities to work with different brands and really make a name for myself which started my influencer career!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, especially trying to balance being a makeup artist, model, and influencer all at once. I struggled with constantly trying to encourage myself to keep going when I didn’t have a lot of clientele at certain times, trying to get people to take me wanting to model as a career and not a hobby seriously, and simply trying to stay motivated when I didn’t get enough views or recognition when I post different content!

I’m my own boss so it was very challenging because I always had to push myself to get up and make beauty/fashion content and market myself in order to make a name for myself. With being an entrepreneur, sometimes your business is going to go really good or go really bad so it was always important to me to make sure I didn’t stay down when things weren’t going right and to keep going and stay motivated!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Helping people and seeing people come has one truly makes me happy! I love unity so when I’m able to add to that in any type of way, it makes my day and makes me feel like I’m doing what needs to be done! I feel helping each other will really solve more problems in life and will make people feel more comfortable doing the same and spread light!
