Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Evans
Hi Jenn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We were living the supposed “American Dream” and we didn’t feel fulfilled. My husband had a stable job in retail management that drained everything out of him, I was working remotely part-time while raising our toddler, and we had a big house, but never got to spend time in it together. We decided to “redefine” our American Dream, sell everything we own, buy a camper, and spend more time together as a family. We will be on the road for a couple of months and will ultimately land in Arizona working at a campground together. We felt like we had exhausted our opportunities in Missouri and were looking to start over new somewhere and we are thankful for where that road is taking us!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This has definitely not been a smooth road. Selling our home, lining up a reliable yet affordable camper, and finding a truck to tow it has all been very challenging. The night before our home closed, we stayed up passed midnight cleaning out every last item we owned and we had no idea how much stuff we had accumulated over time or how long it would take to clear everything out. Once we had everything settled into our camper, we went through different hurdles along the way like buying a broken generator which led to our food rotting in our fridge while we were overseas and away from the camper. We also purchased one truck just to find out it had an un-fixable problem with it and had to cut our losses and get another one. This new truck seems to be better but has still delayed our road trip from starting by almost a week. We also have interesting feedback we get from people like getting called “hippies” or “gypsies.”
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I met my husband catching shoplifters – he worked in Loss Prevention and I was a police officer so he’d catch the shoplifters and I would have to take them to jail! After I got to know him, I realized he was a volunteer firefighter. We went through a stint where we were both full-time in our first responder professions but we both left them full-time in 2021 right before we got married but we’ve been on a volunteer fire department together since 2019. I went through the Fire Academy and EMT school while being a full-time police officer and unfortunately injured my back during the fire department’s hiring process or else I would have been a full-time firefighter as well.
Since we left, Tyler went back to retail management and I began my marketing career. I work remotely for a marketing firm that has a lot of pro-first responder clients and pro-first responder management.
Once we arrive to the campground, I will be helping with their social media and marketing while Tyler will be building tiny homes, RV shelters, and other amenities.
What matters most to you?
Nothing matters more to me than showing our son (Easton, 2), that the whole world is out there waiting for him. I never want him to feel trapped or limited by what opportunities he can pursue. It also means the world to me to provide a happy and healthy home for him which, to me, included my husband leaving his retail management job so he could join us with family time more often. I feel like people get so caught up in needing an “impressive” job over a job that makes them happy and life is too short to settle for the norms instead of reaching for the skies.
