Conversations with Jennifer Sharp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Sharp

Hi Jennifer, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Before working in the communications industry for 10 years so far, I have started my career in communications as a freelance writer. I have written for various publications including the Tri-State Defender, Memphis Small Business Quarterly, The Celebrity Café and The Wedding Design Directory. I have even managed a blog to display my writing skills.

I knew that I wanted to work in the journalism or communications filed in some capacity, but I wasn’t sure where. I officially began my public relations career in 2014 as an assistant account executive while working as a freelance writer. While in between jobs throughout my career, I have even started a boutique communications firm, Sharp Lifestyle Communications, where I help small businesses and nonprofit organizations with their PR and marketing goals.

Despite where I was in my career, or where I was working, I have always had a passion for volunteering. I have served in leadership roles for various organizations including Memphis Association of Black Journalists, Memphis Urban League Young Professionals, Public Relations Society of America, where I served as the president of the Memphis chapter in 2022, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Currently, I work at The Carter Malone Group as the Public Relations Manager where I lead PR efforts for a variety of clients. While not at work, I volunteer my time as an active member of The Junior League of Memphis where I serve as the Communications Manager for the 2024-2026 term. I am also a content creator who shares content involving lifestyle, fashion, travel and events; my content is mainly shared on my Instagram (@jennifer_lsharp) and TikTok (@jenniferlsharp).

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It certainly has not always been a smooth road. Like anyone else, I have dealt with my share of struggles including imposter syndrome, low confidence, people doubting me because of my age, experience, race, etc., and being in environments where I was not valued and appreciated. Despite those struggles, I have always remained perseverant, which is a favorite trait that I have.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the Public Relations Manager at The Carter Malone Group, LLC. I also serve as the Communications Manager for the Junior League of Memphis where I lead communications efforts for the organization.

In my career, I specialize in media relations, writing, social media, and strategic communications and integrating PR, marketing, and advertising campaigns.

What I am most proud of is doing what I enjoy doing every day, which is helping clients meet their goals through storytelling and building and maintaining relationships. What sets me apart from others is that I’m willing to try new things and that I am resilient and don’t give up easily.

What matters most to you?
At this point in my life, what matters most to me is living my life authentically and unapologetically and being happy and at peace with myself. What also matters most to me is continuously growing and learning. These things matter to me because often times we get so lost in our careers and other obligations that we tend to lose ourselves in the process.
