Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Reece.
Hi Jon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve been performing since I was six years old – starting out on an old stage doing drama productions. As I grew older those shows led me to the streets of Hollywood California, where I started to write my own stories through song.
I first picked up a mic under the alias R.E.C on the corner of Hollywood and Highland and from there I haven’t stopped – 5 years later and I’ve returned to my roots to sing and rap my songs for the hometown that made me. From Jonesboro to Memphis, you can bet I’ll be performing my heart out.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
I would say it hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that definitely makes me appreciate it more. There was a time when I was homeless in California, and I can remember staying up late at night, walking, and writing music because I had nowhere else to go.
It definitely gives me a unique perspective on what I can do with absolutely nothing and an appreciation for the good things that did come from that. Sometimes you just have to have the “lows” to enjoy the “ups”.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I would say my most unique aspect as a vocalist/ musician is I don’t trap myself into one genre or “box”- my music is for everyone, and I make music for myself, so that allows me to experience/ experiment with all types of sounds, and music.
As an artist and a performer, it’s our job to be adaptable and open. On the other side, I’ve also taken the time to really delve into every process of making my music- from making the beats to Mastering to writing the lyrics, R.E.C does it all so with that I never truly have to rely on anyone for my sound.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Not to get too sappy- but growing up in foster care from a young age, I would say one of my favorite memories as a child was the day my parents adopted me. I felt like life had sort of started me out rough and to be able to have that second chance definitely shaped me into the person I am today.
