Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Elliott.
Hi Kay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I was always known as “Kay,” the girl with all the flyest sneakers that could dress. Growing up, I played basketball with dreams of playing for Pat Summit coach of the Tennessee Vols. My love for fashion took over after tearing my ACL. For as long as I could remember, I always loved shoes and clothes. I started designing clothing brands in 2011 before coming up with Fazzu. The first brand was “SupaFlii King Clothing”. Over time, I felt the name was too long and I changed it to “Flii King Clothing”. I quickly grew bored with “Flii King Clothing” and felt that I needed a name that better represented where I was going next with my fashion.
In 2012, I moved to Memphis with a friend and we created a brand called “Kraze Array” which meant Wild and Impressive Garments. That brand was short-lived after having to move across Tennessee to Nashville area to be closer to my sick mom. A lot was happening during that time in my life and I was ready to take my passion for fashion to the next level. From 2012 to 2015, I found myself navigating through the shit I didn’t know I was strong enough to handle, and this strength birthed “Fazzu”.
“Fazzu” means Phasing Through Life”. I felt this name was perfect for what I was phasing through; the name also connected the collectives universally. I could see Fazzu in a shirt and a suit jacket. Kay the Stylist and Designer of Fazzu started to take on a Global mission that connected the culture. I started to realize that Fazzu represented something Special past me and it deserved to be displayed all over the world because who isn’t phasing every day in their life in some way? As a black woman, I felt like my people needed something positive to wear and be proud of. It’s also a reminder of how far we have come as a people.
Through every phase beginning with our ancestors, we’ve proven to be resilient time after time. Every brand that I created before Fazzu showed me how strong and resilient I am, and that we grow into our purpose when we don’t quit. My mom would always say “everything is going to be alright” which is a daily reminder to keep going! I am proud to be the representation of something so powerful.
Remember, it’s not what you go through, it’s what you phase through. Heal and grow through every phase. Fazzu.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My biggest challenge as a creator was losing my mom in 2017. She was my best friend and biggest supporter. No one saw me the way that she did, even as a little girl. She always knew who I was and allowed me to just be me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a stylist and creator of Fazzu which is an urban luxury brand. My specialty is in my ability to style without a visual in front of me. I am personally known for my extensive sneaker collection and my fashion along with living the Fazzu Lifestyle. I am most proud of my 2012 Fall/Winter Collection “Urban Quintessentials” which shows my growth as an Urban Luxury Brand.
The thing that sets me apart from others is the exclusivity and limited amounts of apparel our Zu crew is able to get a hold of.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
That everything is going to be ok.
