Conversations with Keisha Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keisha Walker.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Inspiration can come in the darkest hour; a spark of joy can rise out of the night. Glitzy Yard Greetings LLC, based in Memphis, Tennessee, is a family-owned and operated custom yard greeting business, a ray of hope born during a time when my family least expected it.

As our world grappled with the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, the world’s stage demanding racial justice as its people declare, “Black Lives Matter”, and the sudden diagnosis of our oldest daughter, put the Walker family in an instant fight of faith against leukemia. A unique gesture of kindness and love was given to us, as family and friends welcomed our daughter home from the hospital.

The gift of the yard greeting dazzled and simply said, Welcome Home Trinity! This moment of celebration was a turning point, our answer towards healing, and a desire to bring joy and happiness to others.

Trusting in God’s plan coupled with a high sense of integrity, great customer service, and a commitment to excellence got us to where we are today- 1300 signs installed, 1000 customers served, and a 5-star rating from over 200 Google reviews.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been smooth. There have been a few growing pains. When we announced our business venture to friends and family, they were so eager for us to start; they began placing orders before we had inventory.

We quickly had to hire team members to assist us with various roles because it became too taxing to be the designer, customer service rep, installer, administrative, inventory, and social media manager.

Keeping up with demand continues to be a challenge as I am a full-time community affairs professional for a local organization while managing and growing Glitzy Yard Greetings.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For 28 years, I have worked in the nonprofit and public service industry in executive leadership. First working on causes impacting the well-being of children and families to currently, developing systems to grow our volunteer blood supply to save lives.

Dedicating my career in service to others is one thing I am most proud of. It has always been important for me to work for mission-driven organizations and be able to give my time, talent, and resources to make the lives of others better. I am also super proud of my girls and how they have used their gifts and talents to bless the world.

And, I would be remiss if I did not say how proud I am of our family business, Glitzy Yard Greetings. It has truly been a work of heart. My husband has been my #1 supporter and the first member of the Glitzy Team. What sets us apart is our dedication to excellent customer service. Whether working for Glitzy Yard Greetings or for other organizations I am affiliated with, great customer service is always first and foremost.

You only get one chance to make a great first impression so we always aim to get it right the first time or do our best to make it right. When people hear the name Keisha Walker or Glitzy Yard Greetings, we want amazing memorable moments to be top of mind.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The COVID-19 Crisis has taught me that no matter how much I desire to be in control of my life, my surroundings, and experiences there will be times that I will have to trust God, my faith, and the humanity of others.

When our daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia at the height of the pandemic, she had to receive the diagnosis alone because they were not allowing parents in the hospital with children who were at least 18 and could make their own decisions.

From the time I dropped her off at the emergency room to the day she came home, 45 days went by before we saw our daughter in person again. Nevertheless, God was with her every step of the way by having the best nurses, doctors, and attendants that cared for her and prayed with her.

Being admitted to a hospital where a family friend and a cousin were nurses on her floor was an incredible blessing as well. She also had a host of friends and family that showered her with care packages every day so that she would know that she had a team of people rooting for her recovery.

That same lesson has been applied to Glitzy Yard Greetings. There have been many weeks we have started with only a few bookings and by the end of the week, we would have 20. I am constantly being reminded to trust and believe.
