Conversations with Kelly Day

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Day.

Hi Kelly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in a creative household. My mom and I used to paint, see, cook, draw, and uneven built some furniture in college. I bought my first real camera in 2005 and that’s where it all began. I did lots of videos and photos and even shot my first wedding that year. I pursued it as a hobby while working full-time as a consultant for a Fortune 500 company. In 2017, my company was downsizing and I saw that as the perfect opportunity to do this full time. I just knew it was what I was supposed to do. In 2018, I bought my first studio space and have grown into where I am today. I shoot mostly seniors, personal branding and families. I have two photographers I employ who do newborn and weddings. We also are heavily involved in our community with the schools and in community service projects.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would say challenges, absolutely but I have always felt they are part of growth. I have a philosophy that I would rather spend money to save time than to spend time to save money. You can always make more money but when you spend time, you can never get that back. With that said, I have outsourced some functions that were time-consuming but necessary. It is just part of growth.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love to work with clients that are open to creativity. In photography and videography, there are ways to be creative with lighting, composition, styling and posing that are so fun. I like to challenge myself.

I am most proud that I am able to give people a gift they love. I’m proud that I can do this and provide for my family. I’m proud to show my kids that they don’t have to work for someone else. They can make a living with their God-given talents.

I always say as a photographer people choose me for my eye and how I see things. I only capture what I see. I see people as beautiful beings that hold power and energy and serve a purpose. I believe they should be heard and understood and captured for who they are. That is why people choose me. I see them. The real them.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am a big fan of Jen Sincero and Berne Brown books. I listen to their audiobooks on repeat.

As for Podcasts, I listen to The Portrait System and The Spark Files.

I am a member of several education platforms and am working on launching my own soon. In a creative business, there is a sense of community and I want to share what I have learned from being a hobbiest to a full-time photographer to anyone else wanting to make the move.
