Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Evans
Hi Kristi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Here’s a refined version of your story that improves flow, clarity, and impact while maintaining your authentic voice:
I moved to Nashville to earn my BFA in Graphic Design and landed my first freelance design job within my first year of school. I worked hard and earned multiple AAF Gold and Silver design awards, including the AAF Judges’ Choice Award and Best in Show for my portfolio.
A few years after graduating, I moved to Oxford, Mississippi, where I had my son. I took a short break from design, aside from a part-time role as an editorial designer for Hotty Toddy magazine. When I became a single mom, I moved to a small town in Middleton, TN, where I found a part-time remote job designing for a company in Nashville to support my son. Raising a toddler while managing finances was challenging, but God always provided a way.
Eventually, we moved closer to home in Bartlett, TN, where I continued freelancing. I had the opportunity to design for Disney and other major brands, but I also faced struggles. I worked as the sole designer for a Nashville-based company, often overworked and underpaid. At times, the owner didn’t pay me at all, yet I had to keep going because it was my primary source of income. I eventually realized I deserved more. I put in my notice and set out to build my own branding and design business—the studio Kristi.
The transition wasn’t smooth—my former employer wasn’t happy and even attempted to shut down my business with a cease-and-desist, despite my focus being on Memphis clients while they operated in Nashville. But I didn’t back down. I pushed forward, determined to succeed.
This journey has been anything but easy. Working for myself comes with its own challenges and financial uncertainties, but the rewards far outweigh the struggles. Through perseverance, I’ve built strong connections and now work as a contract designer for NASA, Oh Grate, and Not Black Labs in Nashville. I’m also currently developing branding and a website for Bartlett Soccer Club and Paws in Motion Mobile Grooming in Bartlett, TN.
It hasn’t been an easy road, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Every challenge has shaped me into the designer and entrepreneur I am today. And I’m just getting started!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth ride. When work is slow, I stress about not making money. When it picks up, I find myself juggling multiple projects at once. Burnout is real, and sometimes it’s tough to bounce back from. On top of that, the administrative side of running a business? Definitely not my strong suit.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a brand designer who specializes in building brands—not just logos. My focus is on creating identities that are both visually impactful and strategically meaningful.
Beyond branding, I handle all aspects of graphic design, including print, websites, social media, and photography. Currently, I’m working with NASA on various print materials and even designed a website for one of their missions. I also serve as the marketing manager and creative director for Oh Grate in Collierville.
I do a little bit of everything, but my true passion is helping businesses establish strong, purpose-driven brands. In fact, I helped one client boost their sales by over 30% just through rebranding!
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I want to grow my business to the point where I can outsource some of my work to my friend Gena, mentoring her along the way. My goal is to continue creating meaningful brands and helping businesses reach their full potential.
