Today we’d like to introduce you to LaShonda Dancy.
Hi LaShonda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Hello everyone!!! I am a Chocolate Queen and I’m proud of it! But it took me a while to say this statement and mean it. Growing up, I felt insecure about being dark-skinned and never felt good enough. Nearing the end of my 20s, I began a journey to truly fall in love with myself inside and out.
I embraced that I am a chocolate girl, so I shall be THAT CHOCOLATE GIRL and wear it proudly. Through this brand, I want to encourage that teenage girl that feels as though she’s not pretty enough because of her darker complexion and let her know that she is beautiful! She is enough!
So I created a self-empowering journal to help women love themselves.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. A business struggle I often face is a particular size and color of a shirt being out of stock and slow to restock. Some of the personal struggles that I’ve faced are balancing a brand, working 9-5, and also in school.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Outside of That Chocolate Girl, I am in law enforcement/criminal justice, which is also a passion of mine. I am most proud of positively changing lives through evidence-based practices, and I am proud that I am currently pursuing my Ph.D.
My ambition and drive to be better than I was the day before sets me apart from others and to change lives daily by being an example.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as making God proud, my family proud, and myself proud. I feel that success looks different for everyone. As long as my work and my life are pleasing in the eyesight of God, my family, and myself, I am successful.
