Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Marie Bayungan.
Hi Lisa Marie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been part of my life. I’ve been singing and performing for as long as I can remember, but the chapter that truly shaped my career as a voice coach began in 2015 when I moved to Memphis.
Memphis is such a historic music city, and being surrounded by that legacy inspired me to not only perform, but to help develop and showcase other artists as well. I founded CVP Coaching to mentor singers and performers, helping them grow in both skill and confidence. Over time, that work naturally expanded into producing shows, booking talent, and creating opportunities for artists to perform on bigger stages.
I was born in New Jersey but grew up entirely in San Diego, so I’m a California girl through and through. My husband, Tony and I moved to Memphis in 2015, and that’s when I started CVP Coaching. At the time, it was really more of a hobby. I simply wanted to work with a few singers and help them grow. I had no idea it would blossom into the thriving vocal coaching and artist development business it is today.
As my connections in the Memphis music community grew, my work expanded beyond coaching into producing shows and creating performance opportunities for artists. One of those projects is Legends of Soul – Reimagined, a live stage production that celebrates the timeless music of soul legends while giving the songs a fresh life for modern audiences. Instead of traditional tribute performances, the show features powerhouse vocalists performing new arrangements and dynamic medleys of classic hits from artists like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. With live musicians, high-energy staging, and a talented cast of Memphis performers, the production honors the legacy of soul music while presenting it in an exciting and contemporary way.
I also serve as a stage and talent producer for the Delta Fair & Music Festival, one of the region’s largest annual events. I’m responsible for booking and coordinating entertainment on both music stages throughout the fair’s ten-day run. Last year alone, we featured around 70 acts over those ten days, showcasing an incredible range of local and regional talent. It’s a rewarding opportunity to give artists a large platform while also contributing to one of Memphis’ biggest community celebrations.
What started as a small coaching hobby has grown into a career centered around developing artists, producing shows, and creating stages where performers can shine.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel very blessed because when I look back over my journey, I can’t point to any overwhelming obstacles that nearly stopped me. I have an incredibly supportive husband who believes in what I do and always jumps in to help however he can. I also run my studio from home, which has allowed me to continue working with artists in a very personal and flexible environment. No matter what’s going on in the world, people still want to come sing.
One thing I’ve learned is that working with artists is rarely just about singing. I’m a certified life coach and biblical counselor, so many days my clients come in and we don’t start with scales or vocal technique. Sometimes we start with a conversation. We talk about the challenges they’re facing in life — relationships, confidence, stress, finances, or the fears that come with pursuing creative dreams. All of those things affect a person’s ability to perform and express themselves.
So while I wouldn’t necessarily call it a challenge, one of the most meaningful parts of my work is learning to meet people where they are. Some days I’m a vocal coach, and other days I’m simply someone helping an artist work through whatever is standing in the way of their confidence and creativity. Watching them grow not just as singers but as people is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
My clients say, voice coaching is cheaper than therapy — but I know the breakthroughs can be both powerful and life changing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in vocal coaching and artist development. While vocal technique is certainly an important part of my work, what I do goes far beyond simply teaching someone how to sing. I help artists grow into confident performers and professionals.
One of my technical specialties is helping singers develop and strengthen their middle voice — the area where many singers experience what’s commonly called a “vocal break.” Many people think that break is an obstacle, but I teach artists how to blend and maneuver through it so they can access a wider range of notes with power and consistency. Some people refer to it as belting, but it’s really about understanding how the voice works and learning how to balance strength and control so singers can perform with freedom and confidence.
Artist development is another major part of what I do. With many of my clients, we work on everything that surrounds a performance career — song selection, lyric editing, arranging material, stage presence, and learning how to connect with an audience. I also help artists understand the practical side of the industry, including how to run a soundcheck, communicate with sound engineers and crew, submit technical riders, and understand their backline and stage needs. These are skills that many talented performers never get taught, but they make a huge difference when stepping onto a professional stage.
What truly sets my coaching apart is that it comes from real-world experience. I’ve spent a lifetime performing, producing shows, and working on stages myself, so when I guide an artist, it isn’t theoretical advice. In most cases, I’ve already walked through the exact situation they’re about to face. Because of that background, my clients know they can come to me with questions about any stage of their journey — whether they’re preparing for their first open mic or stepping onto a major stage.
I also take a whole-person approach to coaching. As a certified life coach and biblical counselor, I understand that confidence, mindset, and life circumstances all influence how someone performs. Many artists come to me thinking they just need help hitting notes, but often what they really need is clarity, encouragement, and someone who believes in their potential.
Another unique part of my work is that I’m actively creating opportunities for artists through the shows I produce and the stages I help book in Memphis. That means I’m not only helping artists prepare for the stage — I’m also helping create the stages where they can perform.
Any big plans?
Looking ahead, there are several exciting projects on the horizon. My executive producer with Talent One Productions, Jason Taylor, and I are continuing to develop Legends of Soul – Reimagined for 2026. We’re refreshing the cast, adding more audience-favorite songs, and continuing to evolve the show so it stays fresh, energetic, and engaging for audiences.
The Delta Fair & Music Festival is another project that continues to grow each year. As the stage and talent producer, I book both music stages across the fair’s ten-day run, and we’re always looking for ways to make the experience even better. Last year we introduced the Delta Worship Collective, which quickly became a crowd favorite. The collective brings together some of Memphis’ strongest vocalists and musicians for a powerful, high-energy worship experience that celebrates faith and community through music. Because of the incredible response, we plan to continue building and expanding that part of the fair this year.
Personally, I’m also enjoying performing again myself. I’ve been leading a small jazz group and having a wonderful time making music with some incredible Memphis players, including Leroy Clay, Brandon Jenkins, and Dan Fullerton.
Another highlight for me right now is working with one of my youngest artists, seven-year-old Madeline Jones. Madeline has already been featured performing with Elevation Memphis on stages like Lafayette’s Music Room and even appeared in Legends of Soul – Reimagined, where she holds the title of our youngest cast member. Watching young artists like her grow in confidence and talent is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Memphis has such a rich musical legacy, and I feel incredibly grateful to be part of a community that continues to support live music, develop new artists, and celebrate the power of great performances. Being able to help create opportunities for Memphis talent to grow and shine is truly one of the greatest joys of my work
