Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Stephens
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi. Yes. I’m a Christian and a Memphis Independent R&B Gospel Artist and Songwriter. I went to a Performing Arts School . Overton High School in Memphis and was mentored by Music Director Lulah Hedgeman who won numerous awards and led us to win numerous awards and Trophies as well. She taught me professionalism and excellence! She prepared me for my Career in Music as a Gospel Artist. . I started out professionally doing R&B/Pop/Gospel Cover Songs by Deniece Williams, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carrey, Taylor Dayne and CeCe Winans to name a few. I’ve been blessed to be in The Music Industry for yrs. The last 7yrs Ive been doing Originals.Ive been a Praise and Worship Artist and a toured as a Duet Partner with a Tribute Artist. I have 2 Singles and My Single “You Are My Lord” that I wrote is on rotation on many Radio Stations Playlists, Shows and Podcasts, and even Internationally. I have another Single that I wrote “Just Believe” that’s also on Radio rotation , but You Are My Lord is my special and biggest Single Praising The Lord and encouraging people, it’s also a Tribute /Memorial for My precious Momma, who heard me write some of it, but very sadly passed before I Recorded it. I later added the verse “You Were There For Me That Morning when I needed You” ,about God getting me through the worse day of my life. She was very special, all my life always my biggest cheerleader through all my Music Endeavors and became my Bestie. I’m so glad I could help her through her last 7 yrs 2013-2020 of off and on health issues, while also doing my Music ,and especially her last yr as her caregiver. My youngest brother helped as well. She also knew my calling was always to lead people closer to The Lord through my Godgiven soulful voice and uplifting lyrics.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh it’s been a long road. Yrs ago I wrote my Single “Just Believe” to encourage myself and others. There were many yrs of struggle and depression, but I couldn’t give up . I always kept my faith because I always knew it was my calling and purpose, and passion . It’s been especially difficult the last almost 10 yrs 2015 losing my Daddy, then 5yrs later 2020 losing Momma and my beautiful little Maltese girl doggie “Glory Grace”, she was my little girl. I loss her just 6 months after losing Momma., And my youngest brother and I loss our family rescue Allapso mix Doggie “Destiny” that we shared as a family a yr after in 2021. It’s all been hard and sad, Momma is the hardest. But very thankful for our cute black and white Shitzu “Happy” that my brother and I love and share . I’m especially thankful for my relationship with Jesus and my faith to get me through every day.

As I said I’m an Independent R&B Gospel Artist from Memphis Tn. Growing up My family has always had a special place in our hearts for Elvis. My Daddy grew up with him as teenagers and played football after school. I always loved his Voice and passion , especially when he sang Gospel Music. I understand that, because I have that same passion when I Sing. I was blessed to be in Elvis week here in Memphis 2000 and 2001 in The Gospel Event doing Elvis Gospel and my own Originals. I’m so grateful to be reaching so many audiences through all platforms, Radio AirPlay, Playlists, and to be in The top “Reverberation Christian Gospel Artist Playlist in Nashville”So glad to be leading people closer to The Lord. I’m glad that the Songs I’ve written have helped and encouraged many people. I’m also honored to be an Artist on The Charity Album “10 Songs For 10 Families”. It’s an Album that was for Hurricane Maria Survivors families. Legendary Puerto Rican Lead Singers from The Bands Three Dog Night and Badfinger were on there as well. I’m very honored to have received “The Hot Buttered Soul Award” a Stax Award for female Artist and I’m going to receive another Award for Female Artist again later this yr 2025. Im also very honored and grateful to be nominated for 6 Categories in The 2025 The Rhythm of Gospel Awards.in June and was selected to perform in the week as well.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I’m so glad I Know what I’m doing is what I’m called to do. I love it! if you know it’s what your supposed to do God will lead you. Make sure your Mentor honors God, and your gift/ talent is respected and they help you with the excellence and professionalism in whatever your called field is. Also if you have to promote yourself and Business ,let God lead you and do the very best u can! Keep Faith and excellence!
