Conversations with Massey Lane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Massey Lane.

Hello Massey Lane, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Our lead singer, Grant Carr, was writing and recording music and wanted to start a band. Shortly after he started recording the debut EP, Frontier, he met Miles Norwood, the now lead guitarist of Massey Lane. Later, he asked Matthew Sanders to join and play bass. Before starting Massey Lane, Grant was in a band with the new drummer, Logan Harvey.

During the pandemic, the four of us continued to record and practice diligently. On April 23rd, our first EP was released, and we had our first live show as a band. Since then, we have been playing locally around Memphis, as well as other neighboring states. We are currently working on several new songs that we can’t wait to put out for everyone to hear.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We started in March of 2020, right before the pandemic started. All 4 of the band members were also full-time college students and found it difficult to maintain a balance with all things considered. Not to mention, there was no live music at the time. We were fortunate enough to be a part of a flourishing music scene of bands like ours that were able to support each other.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We write and perform our own music. We are quite proud of the fan base we have made so far, and the opportunity to do what has inspired us since we were young. Something we believe sets us apart from others is that we carry a carefree attitude and try to keep things light and create for ourselves instead of others.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
We love that Memphis is so rich with live music, great venues, great food, and great people.
