Conversations with Meri Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meri Williams

Hi Meri, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
This small, nerdy business of mine began in the height of the COVID-19 Global Pandemic when I found myself temporarily out of work, in poor health, and needing a source of income, no matter how meager. I started searching online for a new skill that could prove profitable, something that I could do from home that wouldn’t trap me at a desk or in front of a computer for 10-12 hours on end. I eventually decided to give soap-making a try. It was more interactive and would be a better outlet for my creativity and love of anime.

After several months of practice and coaching from a wonderful mentor out of Canada, I launched my brand at the end of 2020, in December. Ever since then, I’ve been making and selling hand-crafted bath and body products inspired by some of my favorite anime, mobile games, and other popular fandom media.

Now-a-days, I do this as a fully-fledged side-hustle; though, I do hope to one day do it full time as a means of supporting myself. With a vast library of fragrances, I have been blessed to grace DreamCon twice in years past, as well as Anime Dallas in 2023 and 2024. Bath bombs are my specialty, but I also makes pillow/room sprays, perfumes, body oils, shower gel, bath teas, and other unique items!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish I could say that things have been smooth sailing, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’ve had to overcome many obstacles since my journey as a small business owner began. Popularity and public interest dips and rises like an unpredictable ocean tide. Sometimes I’m just not able to make quotas or reach sales goals. It’s a discouraging reality, but giving up has never crossed my mind.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a creative all my life and my inspiration stems from many different sources, but the most prominent of them would have to be my love of Japanese anime. For anyone who may not know, Anime is a style of animation/story telling that originates from Japan. Ever since I was small, Anime has both entertained and inspired me with compelling stories and lovable, memorable characters. Messages of friendship, perseverance, determination, courage, and heroism permeate the medium that is Anime and those virtues never failed to encourage me to chase my dreams and be my true and authentic self.

My love of Anime has inspired many outlets for creativity in my life. From cosplay, to special effects makeup, to fandom inspired cocktails, and now to my small business, Anime has been the driving force behind it all.

I think what sets me apart from others, my own little spot of uniqueness, is the vastness of my interests. There are so many things that I love, so many stories and shows, games, and hobbies that I’ve babbled in. It’d be impossible for me to pick and stick with just one means of creativity and I think that’s pretty special.

How do you think about luck?
To be honest with you, I’m not much of a believer in luck. As a follower of Christ, I believe that what many people might call “luck” are more akin to blessings. I think that everyone, regardless of age, color, creed, or background are beneficiaries of those such divine blessings.
