Conversations with Moni Montana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moni Montana.

Hi Moni, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
There are a few reasons I became a small business owner. The one I will focus on today is, it was my calling. Growing up in a single-parent home I often didn’t feel like I had a voice or an outlet to express myself or my feelings so I kept a lot in. My sexuality played a major role in my loneliness around my peers and at school so yet again no way to express myself.

As you could imagine this led to anger issues which became a problem for my single mother. She then put me in anger management which looking back now was the best thing. I say this because what the therapist said to me started my career. She said since you have no one to talk to write it down, that way you at least got it out. With that one sentence, she changed my life. I started writing my feelings in poetry form which later became music. The greatest thing that ever happened to me.

Now going forward I’ve won several awards and made major milestones in my career such as opening for major artists like Moneybagg Yo, Derez Deshon, & Trina just to name a few. Also, being able to work with major artists such as Projects Pat on new music. Now, feeling very accomplished in my own skin, I can proudly say, I own several small businesses including my Road to Riches clothing line and “Montana’s Big A Burger”. Thankfully.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The easiest part for me in the whole process was picking what I wanted to do. Saying that to say this “Road to Riches” has a lot of bumps and potholes along the way. Lol. A few things that have made it hard for me are finances, 1st and foremost. Living already paycheck to paycheck doesn’t really give you much wiggle room, but that’s where you learn how to do things yourself so you don’t have to pay as much.

Also, the lack of support from others is a hard obstacle because once ppl stop believing in you and supporting you then you have to pull all of your support and encouragement from within so you have to know that you want this more than anything whether people support or not. Last, but not least is the lack of knowledge.

If you want to do something but don’t know how or don’t know the ends and outs of getting it done it’s just u running in circles, which I did for a while, and just getting turned down after turn down because ppl can tell you whatever they want to turn you away. Like because I don’t look a certain way or because I have different sexuality or my hair is locked then I deserve less or whatever you choose to give me.

I say no, I’m going to make it happen with or without your help.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an independent artist and business owner. I specialize in rap/hip-hop, most known for writing my own music, having a go-getter mentality, and being an entrepreneur having started several businesses.

I’m most proud of my spirit and drive to go for my dreams and accomplish my goals even with so much stacked against me. I think what sets me apart from others is that when you look at me in a crowd of people I’d be the underdog and the least anyone would suspect to rise and prevail and accomplish anything amazing.

Then when you hear my music or hear me speak about my dreams and see me create something you’re just blown away and at ahh because nobody bet on me.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I would say, know yourself, know your worth. Don’t settle for the backseat just for a ride. Drive yourself if you have to. Don’t wait for the approval of everyone around you. But also be humble and realistic. Rome wasn’t built in a night so don’t get discouraged.

Keep your head up but above all, stop and smell the roses.
