Conversations with Pinky Da Don

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pinky Da Don.

Pinky Da Don

Hi, Pinky Da Don; we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Dominique Tolver-Smith, known to the music industry as Pinky Da Don. I am a country girl with a passion for music, helping artists and a dream encompassed with extreme determination and consistency.

I started minoring in photography in college, and at college party parties in 2007, I started setting up my backdrop and printing on-site. Then, I started working for housing, and one requirement was to do an event at least once a month. So I started doing an event called “ Floetic House, “ featuring artists and poets, which eventually outgrew the on-campus building I was using and started getting shut down by the campus police. After this, I was asked by a well-known promoter to be a Promoter with him. From there, I started throwing birthday parties yearly to support independent artists. I then started my business, Don Dada Promotions, offering promo services for parties, events, artists & businesses promoting for artists, which led to being asked by artists to manage them! Today, I stand as Texas Fleet DJs Booking Manager, PR for Mogul State Of Mind, A&R/Host for Real Lyfe Street Starz, and within Don Dada Ent, I offer management, booking management, Artist Development, Social Media Coaching & management, Graphics, Event promo, and I do events now and then. Check out my website to see everything else I do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a challenging road. The music scene is tough, and you’ll run across solid people. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I have to demand my respect. I have had an event in Arkansas and been given $80 at the end of the night as if I wasn’t smart enough to know way more money was made. I have not been paid and gotten over on by Dallas promoters. The most challenging thing for me thus far is helping one of my artists who had nowhere to live, whom I allowed to move into a home in my name. He never paid the rent or water bill and ran the balances up to $7000.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am known for managing artists and being the plug for independent artists for performance opportunities on shows. My specialties are event management, Stage management, Music business, and Artist Development. I am most proud of being able to relocate to another state for the first time and elevate. My grind, character, consistency, and perseverance in a male-dominated industry set me apart.

What were you like growing up?
I was born and raised in a small city called Camden, Arkansas. The population was about 14,000 back then. I was the youngest of 5 kids. One sister and 3 step-siblings were in and out of the house until I was about 14 years old. I grew up the daughter of two preachers. I was in church 5 days a week and hated it, but I always loved music. I wasn’t allowed to listen to the black radio station unless it was Sunday, and I couldn’t watch BET, so I would sneak and watch it. I was a complete tomboy growing up who didn’t like nail polish, earrings, or dresses, but I loved all genres of music. This came from the only radio station playing in the house or car, which was the country station. I began writing poetry when I was 13 years old and always wanted to do music, but I knew I would not be supported.
