Conversations with Porsha Townsel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Porsha Townsel.

Hi Porsha , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Cosmetology has been apart of my life as long as I can remember. It was like an afterschool care program for me starting in elementary school. My aunt was the first cosmetologist in my family and I traveled to every salon she worked in after school daily. I was given mannequins to style and was just soaking up the entire salon experience. I’ve always known that cosmetology was the career for me. Going to cosmetology school after high school instead of seeking a college education didn’t seem ideal for success to some. I chose to step out on faith and focus on proving that cosmetology isn’t a hobby, it’s also a career. I graduated from Paul Mitchell The School Memphis in 2011. I specialize in natural hair and nail care. I started a hair product brand in 2017 which is where Hair Goals by Porsh Michelle emerged. I became a certified TN cosmetology instructor in 2022. I’ve taught natural hair courses to the general public, professionals, the youth, and future professionals in the mid-south.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any career, there’s always obstacles and setbacks. The good part about that is, it’s all a learning experience. When I first started, I didn’t have enough clients to afford my weekly booth rental. I kept going and found my specialty which is providing hair care aiding in healthy hair growth. I went from not having enough clients to having a waiting list. I’m a living witness to the fact that you can go from overlooked to overbooked if you remain faithful and focused.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My first specialty is hair care. I’ve been providing hair care services for the past 14years. Natural hair styles, hair care treatments, hair cuts, hair color, and natural looking hair extensions are some of the hair services in which I provide.
My second specialty is nail care. I started providing nail services in 2020 and it has become a popular service for me. Gel manicures, acrylic sets, acrylic overlays, and nail art are some of the nail services that I provide.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Oh boy! Lol, there are so many risks involved , it will have you second guessing yourself a lot. I took the risk of opening a full salon before. I was not as ready as I thought for the many responsibilities of having a full salon. I realized that when you open a full salon, you are no longer responsible for just yourself and your clients but you are also responsible for the upkeep/maintenance of the salon, the employees/team, the salon’s clients, and more. After three years of having a full salon, I down sized to a salon suite for my peace of mind. I do, however, plan to expand again. Risks that don’t work out, don’t mean failure. It’s all a learning experience.
