Conversations with Ranieka Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ranieka Johnson.

Hi Ranieka, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey in Memphis began with being an impactful poet and spoken word artist. From that, I was able to capitalize and create other businesses such as hospitality, community service, and business coaching, to name a few. My businesses succeed off the trust I build with my village and community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. Where there is success comes struggle. I face the same challenges that any other small or minority business faces, lack of funding, lack of resources, and lack of mass promotion. The lack of mass promotion is a big one, even in social media. I believe our businesses are targeted and shadow banned on purpose. Due to that, it is extremely difficult to gain new clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I do a lot, however, I am a great big ball of art and hospitality. They go hand and hand. I do believe you can’t have one without the other. So not only am I a spoken word artist, I am also a promoter. A promoter that has been afforded to be able to mesh the two together through artistic events. What I am most proud is being able to build an entire artistic event planning company with the love of me life, my husband.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Please get a mentor. One that is a trusted expert. One of my favorite philosophers said “the only thing I know is that I know nothing” Socrates. I carry that into my every day life. There is always someone to learn from. There is always something to teach.
