Conversations with Ro Ajamu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ro Ajamu.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I fell into a career of art at age eight when my fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Withers entered and pastel piece into a Memphis In May contest. After placing second, I began to take art seriously. My transition into the tattoo arena happened during my college days @ Austin Peay State University. Surprisingly enough… my recommendation came from a homeless person that saw me drawing one day. This guy insisted that I walk around the corner to this special tattoo shop… he wouldn’t even go in when we got there! Long story short, I was granted an apprentice under one of the best artists in Tennessee (Andy Casali lll). I returned to Memphis after Casali passed. I hold close the memories we created and use them as motivation to get better everyday. Over the last ten years, I’ve earned the title of “Tattoo King Of Memphis” while working side by side with other great Memphis artists to upgrade the entire art/tattoo narrative in the city.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. I remember days I hated tattooing… loved the art but hated the fact the finance didn’t meet… took time to reach the quality needed to be comfortable as a dad and tattoo artist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Portrait Tattoos are my specialty New Skool Tattoos and Custom Freehand Art are also some of my favs. Honestly just proud to be one of the artists the community loves… I love to see people smile after a successful ink session.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
