Conversations with Ulises “Lamixsi” Cornejo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ulises “Lamixsi” Cornejo.

Hi Ulises, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! My name is Lamixsi born and raised in Memphis. Being a queer child in a strict household, getting into makeup and costumes is something I would do late at night once my entire family was sleeping, there I would perform for an audience of none but with the satisfaction of knowing I had found huge joy.

I had found the other half of myself that was buried deep in my own insecurities. It wasn’t until the ICON, Bella Duballe, believed in me enough to cast me in their very own competition “War of the Roses”. Each week we competed for the title of the brightest rose in the garden.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The hardest obstacles I’ve had to face are overcoming my fear of failing and letting me be my most authentic self. After 6 hard weeks of competing in the garden, my soul was finally put to rest after placing fifth in the competition. I am most grateful to have gotten my start in drag by being surrounded by confident and humble entertainers.

Hearing stories from other drag queens on how much they struggled to fight for a place in the industry is extremely humbling to me, considering I have yet to feel out of place. It is the resilience and hard work ethic of our queer community that keeps us going and going.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Being a baby drag queen I am still testing the waters trying to find out who I am and what more I represent, I’d like to think that Lamixsi can be described as charming, eccentric, and most notably a dancer. After War of the Roses, I began to perform in bars and lounges around the Memphis area, traveling to open stages in Nashville, and it wasn’t until then that I realized that you have got to get out there to be seen!

Every time you are on that stage, in that bar, in that lounge give 100%. Allow the audience to feel every emotion you’ve stored that entire week, that entire month, that entire year, I have credited a “lip sync assassin” which just means I do what needs to be done!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
As a drag queen, confidence is something you MUST have (maybe not too shallow don’t get crazy). With my drag journey, I’ve been able to finally accept and love myself for who I am. A limped wrist queer who loves art, fashion, and his community. We are self-accepting.

We are kind. Drag queens love compliments, tell me my sweated-out contour is sharp. We are human and we are striving together to empower every other person who has ever felt the way we have or gone through obstacles we’ve crossed.
