Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Chambers.
Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Memphis Wind Symphony is a sixty-five-piece concert band comprised of talented musicians from all around the Mid-South. Our goal as a not-for-profit organization is to spread our musical magic around this great city! We perform in concert halls, auditoriums, amphitheaters, schools, churches, and parks around the Greater Memphis Area.
In the 1970s our group started as the Germantown Family Band and then became Germantown Summer Band and Shelby State Community Band. In the 1980s the band expanded to perform concerts year-round and was known as the River City Community Band.
In 2015, our all-volunteer organization re-branded to its current name, The Memphis Wind Symphony. Under the baton of Maestro Barry Trobaugh, our community band has become the premier wind ensemble in the Memphis area.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Our group is unique in that we have 65 volunteer musicians who meet to rehearse and/or perform each and every week. Organizing that many volunteers and securing funding for music, transportation, equipment, and rehearsal space is an ongoing adventure, for sure.
The Memphis Wind Symphony has a core team of musicians who care deeply about the band, and they help with whatever needs to happen to make our music-making possible.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The Memphis Wind Symphony is made up of musicians from all walks of life. Our group is full of doctors, lawyers, teachers, and nurses that come together to make music. I am just one of the musicians who make up our ensemble.
I am a clarinet instructor who teaches both privately and in school band programs. In addition to being an educator, I work as a freelance bass clarinetist and clarinetist, in addition to playing piano for churches and funeral homes.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
