Today we’d like to introduce you to Apphia Salter.
Hi Apphia, It’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us. To start, could you share some of your backstory with our readers?
Before I was even born, my parents were the type to play music while my mom was pregnant, so by the time I was two, my dad taught me to play the drums. He taught me songs like “Brick House” and “Single Ladies,” which made my music taste top-tier at a young age. Time passed, and around my fifth-grade year, I discovered I could sing, so when I got to middle school, I joined the CAPA Choir, Creative and Performing Arts Program, at Colonial Middle School. This changed my perspective on creating and its different forms, so I continued singing in the CAPA program at the prestigious Overton High School under Mrs. Delphime Huddleston. My parents captured these moments on camera, from a baby on inexpensive film cameras to the newest smartphone. As I got older, I realized that I could reflect on pictures to see myself gradually grow into who I am today. Those special moments made me want to provide memories for other people, so when I got my first phone, I would take tons of pictures and create Flipagram videos for my family. This went on for years, so in 2019, my parents bought me my first real DSLR camera, and that’s when the magic took off!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My creation journey has been smooth, and that’s only because of God’s grace and mercy. Now, I have had challenging moments like anyone else, like feeling like my work is insufficient because I don’t have the latest equipment or people I thought would help me switch on, but God made my path smooth. I know my gift is from him, and I wouldn’t be where I am without it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in everything from my photography and videography business, which branches into my graphic design work. I sing and play drums, mainly at my church home. I am also a junior at the University of Memphis, majoring in communications and concentrating in film and video production with a minor in graphic design. I am well versed in all of these spaces, but I take the most pride in and am known for my photography and videography. I have always had a “vision” for capturing things creatively, and my clients are always delighted with the memories they receive. I am most proud of my internship this past summer at The Hunter Fan company, where I worked in the marketing department as a video intern, capturing and editing content. Using my skills in a corporate setting was totally different and creatively challenging working with something that had no life, but I was able to learn new skills that I have kept with me. What sets me apart from others is that I am all about trying my best. I am learning that I can only be me because that’s who God has made me to be, so whoever does not like it own them.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
As I’ve stated before, the most important lesson I have learned is to be myself. In this age of social media, it can get very discouraging because you’re digesting so much content from people worldwide, and you begin to feel like you need to do more or that your work needs to be revised. But in reality, we all have different journeys. So, I walk my path and try to learn for myself.
