Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Stewart.
Ashley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Since a little girl, I’ve always been two things – girlie & “bossy”.
I can remember my mom saying to me, “Ashley, do you remember in elementary school when you all had to dress up for Halloween and you went as a businesswoman?” I surely do. With my love for purses, all things girlie, and my passion for leadership, it was only fitting. It was actually several years ago when I had the idea to sell purses.
Not just any purses, but I wanted them to be unique and fun! However, in all transparency, I tend to second guess myself, and so there I was with a box full of purses that I’d ordered but was hesitant to sell lol.
Fast forward to 2020, during the pandemic, the idea came upon me again. I was working from home and had a little more flexibility, so that’s when I actually executed and Pretty Purseonal was born.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It absolutely has not been easy. First & foremost, I’m a mother. A wife and a mother. And so, the responsibilities that come with those titles are not easy to bear.
Actually, I took about a 6-month hiatus from Pretty Purseonal because of this. Additionally, I will say another challenge is that we live in an era that is the high technology and social media driven. It takes a lot to create content and to ensure that I’m being consistent with posting in order to gain potential customers.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, my main career is as a Health Services Specialist. I actually just started this position about 2 weeks ago. I pretty much do all things Social Services and Leadership. I’ve worked for social services/non-profits since graduating from college 11 years ago, and I’ve been in leadership roles for 10 of those years.
I’ve held many positions from a Youth Counselor, Family Services Specialist, Supervisor, and Community Educator, to Site Manager. Leadership is my thing. I absolutely, positively love leadership and helping to inspire and develop others. I’m definitely most known for my leadership skills… and my written skills.
I can critique a paper and write a resumé “like nobody’s business”. Just a fun fact!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I don’t have a mentor currently. My God and I work closely together. However, I did have one a few years back who was very knowledgeable and taught me great things that I’ve carried with me. I will also say that I am inspired by many women entrepreneurs or “girl bosses” on social media.
The main one is one of my best friends, Jamie. She started a side business about 5 years ago selling treats and has remained very consistent. It’s inspiring and an honor to watch her grow! As far as networking, I’d say that social media is a good place.
I’ve connected with many businesses, and have been invited to pop-up shops, and in-person and virtual networking events. But the old school way is a good method as well!! I still pass out business cards/flyers, and word of mouth is highly effective!
