Daily Inspiration: Meet Desiree McMurry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree McMurry.

Desiree, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My whole life I suffered from terrible cystic acne.

Kids in elementary would tease me by calling me “Zitzilla.” I was so embarrassed that I would make up excuses not to go to school if I had one pimple. I would try everything to cover my acne. After I graduated high school, I went to Volstate to become a Vet Tech.

I saw how insecure my mom was about her face and I became very aware of me not ever seeing her without makeup my whole life. I’ve always looked up to my mom and I’ve always wanted the best for her, so I knew it was time for a change.

I stayed in college for one year and transferred to Paul Mitchell to start the esthetician program. I’ve always been the type to help everyone.

My goal is to always make other people feel good about themselves, even if I didn’t feel good about myself. I learned very quickly in school to start caring for myself as well. My skin started to become very clear, my confidence started building up and I knew that was my purpose in life. So, I started helping other people feel confident in their own skin just like I did. I’ve been in the business for 2 years now and I love every moment.

I make sure my clients leave with better intentions than how they came in. Seeing my clients smile, makes me feel good about my work. I want to provide a space where my clients are comfortable with me. Don’t feel embarrassed about embracing your natural beauty. I’m an esthetician who understands and has been through the struggle.

Flawless skin doesn’t come overnight.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first year of getting started was a little hard because it was during Covid.

People weren’t coming to get facials because it’s human contact, but I didn’t let that stop me from furthering my education. I got certified in dermaplaning, eyelash lift and tint, brow lamination, and infrared body detox. During that time I went back to my old job at Mount Juliet Montessori Academy and I started nannying, so I could pay for extra classes since I wasn’t making any money from facials.

Working with kids and having nieces made me never want to stop dealing with kids. I had to figure out how I could still be with kids and continue my esthetic. Seeing my nieces look up to me and loved watching me give facials, it gave me the idea to start doing kiddie facials.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an esthetician located in Mount Juliet Tennessee, 25 minutes from Nashville. I specialize in Dermaplaning, Infrared detox sauna, lash tint and lift, and Brow lamination but I do offer a bunch of other services.

I’m known for being real and not rushing so the client gets the full experience. I space out my clients so if they need some extra care they can get it. Making sure they’re leaving with the best results. If a client asks me a question and I’m not sure, I will tell them.

I’m not going to recommend something that I’m not sure if it’s going to work or not. If I’m not comfortable performing a service or see a client needs more attention than what I can give, I will refer them to another esthetician with more experience. I want everyone to be treated the right way and get the right treatment. I support all estheticians and wish success to everyone.

I didn’t choose this career for the money, I did it to help people feel beautiful in their own skin. I’m proud of my journey and the love and support I get from everyone. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the love everyone has shown me. I’m different from most estheticians because I don’t have the “professional look”.

I have tattoos, colorful hair, and piercings but under all that I have a welcoming smile, a big heart, and a lot of knowledge. I’m a big family person so you will get treated like family. I want to give everyone the experience of coming in and not feeling judged for how they are.

Walking into my doors, I want you to leave all your worries behind. Forget the world for a moment, relax, and breathe.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Go for it! This was the best decision in my life and I couldn’t be any happier! The advice I give is to continue your education and expand your knowledge after graduating. Don’t give up.
