Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Dickerson.
Hi Kendra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I became enamored with baking through the eyes of my grandmother. My grandmother, Joyce Wilson, had a catering and baking company when I was younger. As a child, I would thoroughly watch her measure every ingredient with precise pinches while being mesmerized by the final outcome of layered cake and sweet glossy icing filling a cake tray.
That little girl knew back then that this is what she wanted to do! As I got older, I begin asking my grandmother for recipes and tips on how to make the perfect cake or banana pudding. I would allow her to show me how to perfectly layer each cookie or cake slice so that the final presentation was incomparable. I took her baking wisdom and started what is called today, “The Halo Dessert Company” where each bite tastes like heaven!
This dessert company is not only a business but a legacy. Each dessert I create is made with my grandmother’s passion flowing through my veins and it is an honor to continue to do what we both love – cater and bake.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road to get where I am today has not been easy, but that’s the beauty of it! I wouldn’t have a testimony nor tell anyone of my journey if it was all smooth sailing. The road I’ve endured (and still enduring) has been a small business road of bumps, bruises, trials, and tribulations. I’m grateful for my loyal customers and the new customers I will reach in the future with my unique and one-of-a-kind recipes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve worked in property management for the past 11 years. I’m a Regional Marketing Manager and I manage the advertising and marketing for residential communities (student and affordable). I’m proud that I have found my niche in property management.
I love being a part of a family finding their perfect home through the message I convey for each community. The smile on their face when they open the door to their new apartment homes makes my career worthwhile.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson has been to always remember why I started this. At times, you can get bogged down with new requests, promoting your business, and even dry periods of no one reaching out.
It can get discouraging but I always remind myself why I started, and that I’m not finished yet! The journey of The Halo Dessert Company has just begun and I am so thrilled to experience this rollercoaster of moments while it’s still growing.
