I’m Chef Lernard Chambers, owner and founder of The Genre Memphis — a restaurant and experience built from passion, creativity, music, and resilience. Born and raised in Memphis, entrepreneurship has always been a part of my journey. Before opening the restaurant, I spent years building businesses in entertainment, DJing, production, photography, and event experiences throughout the city.
Music has always been a major influence in my life, and I wanted to create something that blended Memphis culture, great food, good energy, and unforgettable vibes all in one space. That vision became The Genre Memphis — a “musical passport” where every guest is treated like a celebrity. From the vinyl records on the walls to the crafted cocktails and signature dishes, every detail represents our love for culture, hospitality, and the city of Memphis.
The journey hasn’t been easy. Like many small business owners, we’ve faced challenges, sacrifices, long nights, and moments where we had to fight to keep pushing forward. But through consistency, community support, faith, and hard work, The Genre Memphis has continued to grow into one of downtown Memphis’ unique dining and nightlife experiences.
Today, we’re known not just for our food, brunches, and events, but for creating an atmosphere where people can celebrate life, network, laugh, and feel inspired. More than anything, I’m proud that our story continues to motivate others to chase their dreams, support local businesses, and show that anything is possible coming from Memphis.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey definitely hasn’t been easy. Like many small business owners, we’ve faced challenges with rising costs, staffing, long hours, and the daily pressure of running a restaurant while creating a unique experience. There were difficult moments that tested us mentally, financially, and emotionally, but every obstacle helped us grow stronger. Through consistency, faith, and support from the Memphis community, we’ve continued to push forward and evolve The Genre Memphis into the brand it is today.

At The Genre Memphis we specialize in creating an experience through food, music, culture, and hospitality. We’re known for our high-energy atmosphere, signature dishes, crafted cocktails, and making every guest feel like a celebrity. What sets us apart is our “musical passport” concept — blending Memphis culture, great food, and unforgettable vibes all in one space.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe the restaurant industry is shifting more toward experiences, strong branding, and technology. Customers want more than just food — they want atmosphere, entertainment, and memorable moments. Online ordering, social media marketing, and unique dining concepts will continue to grow, while businesses that focus on authenticity, quality, and customer experience will stand out.
