Daily Inspiration: Meet Lisa And Ron Bobal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa And Ron Bobal

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Stigma has and still is the biggest road block we face today. From struggling to find a location for our SSP to getting funding, people stigmatize drug use and drug users as people who are less than and not worth the help. We know that they are someone’s son. daughter, mother, father, sister or brother and we have proven that with our help they can lead healthy, productive lives. 6 of our 8 employees are former drug users, 4 of which came through our program to get help. This proves our SSP model works to overcome addiction.
Funding is a huge struggle. Currenly we exist on government reimbursement grants. It is very difficult to get buy in from corporations and other foundations due to the nature of what we do.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Originally started as a resource and referral source only, A Betor Way has grown to an organization with 8 employees who work year round to assist those struggling with addiction.

I have a long history of being involved in the Memphis community. From producing events to fundraising for various organizations such as Arts in the Park, The Ronald McDonald House, Overton Square and the Alzheimer’s Association. Before losing my son, Ronnie, I made a change in my career to work in the healthcare field working with people with dementia and their families. I am definitely most proud of A Betor Way and all the people we have helped. Giving them a sense of hope and seeing that someone cares for them, helps them make the decision to seek help and we are there for them when they make that decision. I also run a grief support group for those who have lost a loved one to overdose. It is called GRASP – grief recovery after a substance passing – and we meet the 3rd Monday of the month at 6 pm at Hope Church room 238. I’d say what sets me apart is I am a caring, empathic person who does what she says, and says what she does!

What’s next?
Currently, we are looking to expand our services to a 5 day a week program once we can find a brick and mortar location. Then we will be able to offer help to more individuals and not just on Friday nights. This will make a huge impact in the work we do.
