Daily Inspiration: Meet Luis Oliart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Oliart.

Hi Luis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Inglewood and Orange County and started playing music in middle school. The social crowds I was hanging out with were all artists. I quickly started performing at high school parties – punk rock for the backyard parties and rock and roll for the house parties.

I’ve had the opportunity to perform music around the world, playing anywhere from Carnegie Hall to B.B. King’s Blues Club. I’ve played on stage with Brian Setzer, Scott Page (of Pink Floyd, Supertramp, and Toto), Robby Krieger (Doors), and Dennis Quaid.

I started teaching music about 20 years ago. My band, Luis Oliart, and the Hinges, rocks venues throughout Southern California. My bandmates include Norwood Fisher and John Steward of Fishbone, and guitarist Jay O’Keefe. In addition to acclaim as a musician, performer, writer, producer, and teacher, I also am an advocate for helping the homeless. My recent efforts were featured on KTLA-NBC news.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I had to learn to survive as an artist living in LA and taking care of my son.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have the ability to adapt what I learned as a musician and tour into managing large projects that help the community, lower-income residents, and people experiencing homelessness.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In this post covid world, I think there will be an influx of more live music. In addition, more musicians have opportunities for their music to be heard through uploading to social media platforms such as Instagram reels, Tiktok, and Youtube.
