Daily Inspiration: Meet Mali Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mali Wilson

Hi Mali, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started singing and writing music as a child in a small town in Illinois called Waukegan just 45 min from Chicago. My family had a church and my Grandparents played Gospel and Blues. My Father is also a musician and gave my sisters and I the gift of music and performance. I’ve been blessed to have been poured into by some amazing mentors. Award winning producer Alan Moore & Music Mogul Clarence Avant were instrumental in my growth as a musician and business person. My creative Partner Craig Snider produced my 1st UK hit in my younger years and we are now continuing our creative journey together, producing and writing, scoring for tv/film and traveling the world performing our new songs. I am my Great Grandmother’s namesake and would be remiss not to share that the character building lessons that she taught me helped me to persevere and succeed throughout the years. My passion for music was reignited when i fell in love with my now creative partner and husband Eric Wilson. I have just finished a year long creative journey with Multi Grammy Winning Producer Mark Batson and am happy to say that i now understand that since i come from many different musical influences and backgrounds that i have found a sound that i truly love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was long and bumpy for a very long time. I guess I had all the normal starving artist struggles during my younger years, being homeless, finding opportunities to create in safe studio spaces, and understanding the business without getting taken advantage of. The toughest times were in the early years before the Grammy Nominations, and Emmy win when I wanted to create music that meant something and label folks just wanted to over sexualize what I was doing and not acknowledge me as a producer and business person. Thankfully I am rooted deeply in my faith and I didn’t compromise myself along the way. After tapping back into the Chicago, SOCAL, and Memphis music scenes I feel very happy that through my songs I am now paying homage to the Blues, Jazz, and Gospel greats that have influenced my musical tastes and the worlds,

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Blues, Jazz, and Gospel, singer who’s also a Grammy winning producer, and business woman. I traveled with my band creating a following in the early 2000″s as an artist and landed a deal with the legendary Clive Davis. After deciding that there was much more I needed to learn about where the business was going before jumping in as an artist, so I passed on the deal. I then took a break from singing and have spent the last decade helping other artist create in safe spaces like my StoneWood Studios in Chicago & Atlanta. I also spent time scoring films, producing other artist, a&r’ing, business managing for Carly Simon and others. I am most known for helping others in my old studio partnership as my maiden name Malissa “Mali” Hunter. I am now proud that I can create with my husband like “Ashford & Simpson” did. I am also excited to be working out of Royal Studios in Memphis with Grammy Winning producer “Boo” Mitchell. I am also proud to have tapped in with Grammy Winning producer Drumma Boy who is also from Memphis TN.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Work that matters is important to me and my music is a testament to just that, I am using my voice and music to bring unity, love, and awareness to the world while shining a light and paying homage to the artists that have paved the way for us all. I want to leave a legacy of love behind and to help people have hope along the way. Raising money and helping empower others through our #EarthGirlATL and EarthAngel non profit is important and has been a huge blessing.
