Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Wilson.
Hi Meredith, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I come from a long line of artists and engineers so it came naturally to me when I started doing art in high school. I went on to obtain my BFA in Painting at the University of Memphis.
I wanted to share my love of art so I decided to become an art teacher. I also made a promise to myself to teach art and to also do my own and pursue an art career. I have kept up that promise to myself and to this day 19 years later I am still teaching and creating art outside of school.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has only been slightly marred with bumps. I started in a home studio and was lucky enough to make and save enough money to be able to afford a large studio in midtown.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is rather unique and varying. I am not afraid to try new mediums/subjects and this is due to me being a teacher. My brain is always thinking of new ideas. For the past 10 + years, I have been playing with resin and how it has the ability to seal an object, you can paint on it and you can also draw/paint on it to create depth and dimension.
Lately, I have been collecting vintage ephemera (cards, advertisements, photos) that I want to give a second life. I want those forgotten special objects to have a second more elaborate life and I feel like my love and care for these items sets me apart from others. I am making art that has meaning and stirs memories for myself and the viewer.
What do you think about luck?
I am a person that doesn’t necessarily believe in good or bad luck. I believe in what was meant to be and not meant to be. I was meant to be an artist and I was meant to be an educator.
If I did have to place the word luck in his I would say that I am LUCKY to have such supportive people in my life that give me inspiration and that purchase my art to give me more abilities to make more and more.
