Daily Inspiration: Meet Mike Hobday

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Hobday

Mike, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am the host and producer of Memphis Mike and Friends, a local podcast born out of a simple question: how to keep our friend Memphis Mike (that’s me) engaged while his friends (the TigerManiacs) are busy with work. You see, I’ve been battling boredom ever since I had to retire due to a cancer diagnosis in 2017 that nearly took my life. My health journey has been tumultuous beginning with a kidney transplant in 2002 to battling rare skin cancer and starting dialysis in 2017 to quadruple bypass surgery in 2023. If I can remain cancer free, I am eligible for a another kidney transplant in 2025.

After the “TigerManiacs” suggested I start a podcast, the theme for the podcast struck me one day while reflecting on how little I knew about a 90-year-old church friend whose obituary I read. There was so much I did not know about him. I wanted to learn more about people—what makes them tick, their hobbies, and their life stories. This curiosity led to the first podcast episode on February 22, 2024.

Known for my infectious enthusiasm, I keep the conversations lively on Memphis Mike and Friends. The show celebrates Memphis through a diverse array of guests: from everyday heroes with extraordinary stories to local legends and unsung gems. Our past guests have included local TV anchors, athletes, veterans, beekeepers, community leaders, world-class fishermen and more, with even brighter prospects ahead.

Memphis Mike and Friends isn’t just about podcasting; it’s my therapy—a lifeline that keeps me connected and positive. Amidst the negativity often highlighted in the news, our podcast aims to spotlight the goodness and resilience of Memphis. Through engaging conversations, we aim to uncover the untold stories of our city, showcasing the diverse tapestry of Memphians—from corporate leaders to everyday heroes, each contributing to our community in their unique way.

I don’t expect fame or a massive following. For me, this podcast is about nourishing my mind, body, and soul—a true life saver.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Regarding my health, I need to maintain a cancer-free status for five years to qualify for a kidney transplant. I’m on track to achieve this milestone by December 2024. Remarkably, a gentleman from my church has volunteered to undergo screening as a potential donor. The transplant process will commence later this year, involving extensive screening and testing for both myself and the donor. Having undergone my first transplant in 2002, I have some familiarity with what to expect.

Our podcast’s primary challenge lies in consistently attracting high-caliber guests as we have thus far. Expanding our network is crucial, and I often inquire, “Who do you know that I haven’t met?” We’ve been fortunate to feature a diverse range of guests, from news anchors and retired Air Force personnel to ministry leaders, champion athletes, and even beekeepers and radio hosts. Currently, we’re in talks to schedule the Film Commissioner of The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission and one of the duck handlers at The Peabody Hotel. Our podcast celebrates Memphians and resonates with our community.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I dedicate most of my time to hosting and producing the podcast ‘Memphis Mike and Friends’ alongside my four rotating co-hosts, affectionately known as the “Tigermaniacs” – Scott Morton, Greg Hall, Steve Williams and Jeff Moser. We’ve been friends for over 20 years, and each bringing their own unique perspective to every episode. These men have meant so much to me and my family these last 7+ years. They have displayed the true meaning of ‘friend’ and we are all blessed to have them in our lives.

In addition to podcasting, I collaborate with a local 501(c)(3) organization called Memphis Crime Beat. Our mission is to drive judicial system reforms through meticulous observation and data analysis. As part of the Data Team, my role involves analyzing and validating publicly available data, which forms the basis of our insightful reports.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Through my challenging health journey and the Covid-19 crisis, I’ve seldom let anything steal my joy. Despite four near-death scares, I’ve been inspired to embrace each day fully. In my darkest moments, two words—”BUT GOD”—became my testimony. These words echo
Psalm 49:15 “But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.”

I strive to be a role model for others facing adversity. I wear a bracelet that has two simple words “BUT GOD” on it. This reminds me daily of God’s promises and sparks meaningful conversations. My testimony emphasizes that despite our circumstances, we can find joy and comfort through God’s grace.
