Daily Inspiration: Meet Mike Horton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Horton.

Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I work in the orthotic and prosthetic industry with my father. brother and sister. My father started the business in 1981 and we have grown to six locations in AR. I started working in the shop when I was 13, learning how to fabricate what is the heart and soul of what we do.

If you do not fabricate the prosthesis correctly it will eliminate the patient’s ability. I then went to UCA and received my degree in Kinesiology followed by going to Northwestern and receiving my prosthetic degree. I met my wife of 20 years at UCA.

She is from Morrow and we have two kids. My goal and passion in life are to create the best outcome for my patient and give them their quality of life back. I have dedicated my life to this goal.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The most challenging thing today is trying to get paid by insurance. I can look at patients and tell them what they need but insurance will come back and tell me nope this what we are paying for this is what we think they need.

This will greatly reduce the patient’s functions and actives. The temporary issue right now is the supply chain issue and trying to forecast our needs so we do not run out of fabrication supplies.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Medical/orthotics and prosthetics.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
We had to learn how to pivot and adapt quickly. We have dealt with the same staffing issues and supply issues as everyone else. It can be stressful but you just have to keep moving and remember the patient outcome is what we are striving for.
