Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Vining.
Hi Richard, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We started 7 years ago to serve as a complimentary exhibit to the other cultural and musical attractions that Memphis is so good at. Located 600 feet down the street from Sun Studio, we offer a chronological story of the American sports car that overlaps with the era of music they present.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With our “American Speed” exhibit opening in 2019, things started off well…but as an attraction that relies on tourism, the drop in travel during COVID was difficult. We continued to be open every day, but traffic was light to stay the least.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in American sports cars from WWII to the fuel crisis. As a smaller exhibit, our focus is tight and tells an engaging story of both how and why the sports car came about in America. Highlighting social, political, cultural, and design influences of the era, we are most proud of the fact that our exhibit cars, which all of which are on loan, are running and driving examples. Not props!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
To continue to present cars as they were when they were designed, built, and driven. Tell the story they told in both their immediate and current context without changing either side.
