Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Roy.
Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I have been cooking/baking since high school. I am a self-taught Baker actually. In 2015, I was baking as a side gig while working a full-time job. It wasn’t until 2016, that I decided that I couldn’t do the 9-5 full-time job anymore. I was getting tired of it and it felt like I was getting too comfortable with it despite the cons of working there. So, I decided to put in my two weeks, saved a little money, and started a part-time job for about 3 months to focus more on baking becoming my full-time business. Eventually, I quit part-time and became a full-time entrepreneur.
During that time of baking and up until 2019, I baked and cooked everything you can think of. From cakes, cupcakes, candy, brownies, cookies, cheesecake, ice cream, pies, cobblers, bread, just anything you can think of to bake, I baked it. I couldn’t find out what exactly I wanted to focus on and specialize in. I just knew I loved baking and I wanted to be a one-stop- bake shop. But it started to wear down on me especially because I’m a single mother of three and I’ve never hired any help. It’s been me and me only doing it all in every aspect of my business. And baking as well, everything became overwhelming.
In 2019, I decided to focus on one particular dessert, which was Cheesecake. It is my favorite dessert, my first bake, and my first love. I have been all about Cheesecake since then. However, there are a couple of things I couldn’t let go such as cookies, brownies, and ice cream. I’ve grown so much as a small woman-owned business since then and I strive to keep on going stronger. I now operate as a dessert catering business serving individuals and catering events from birthday parties, dinners to company luncheons.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. There has been a lot of long nights, early mornings, losing sleep, stepping out of my comfort zone, and definitely financial challenges. I mean like any other small business starting from the ground up is tough.
I didn’t have thousands of dollars when I started. I just started with a little amount of money and jumped out there on faith. There were definitely days I became discouraged and wanted to give it up and go back to my 9-5 job. But every time that thought came across my mind, customers would place orders. And I know I couldn’t give up. I knew I had a gift to share and I couldn’t let it go. Another thing that is still tough is getting out there, marketing yourself. That has not been easy at all, especially as a home baker. But I have tried a variety of avenues and it has definitely helped my business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sweet Stuffed?
At Sweet Stuffed, we specialize in Cheesecake but provide other sweets like cookies, brownies, and our own homemade ice cream. We are most known for our Turtle Cheesecake and cheesecake jars. Cheesecake jars are actually where the name Sweet Stuffed came from. I’m a catering dessert business ran solely by me. My desserts are homemade from the crust on the cheesecake to our ice cream.
Sweet Stuffed provides a variety of flavors as well. At least 42 and counting. We are affordable and take pride in our customer service. I am known for my great customer service. I listen to each customer good and bad and I make adjustments if necessary to not only satisfy one customer but all of my past and potential customers. I’m big on constructive criticism.
At the moment, we don’t have a storefront but keep a lookout because we are working on that. But we are making some partnership moves soon. Also, be sure to check out my website, I love giving great offers and I run a special at least once a month. We offer reward programs as well.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Great customer service, patience, and passion for not only baking but helping others. I always try to put myself in a customer’s shoes. I ask myself what would I expect and I go above and beyond to deliver that. The cliche patience is a virtue is very much true. I have learned not to rush things and pace myself. Everything won’t come to me when I want it but it always shows up when I need it.
When business is off peak is when I have to learn patience the most. But my passion for baking and helping others reminds me not to ever get ahead of myself or give up. That passion has kept my business successful. I love to create, bake and share it with the world.
