Hi Cortera, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started preparing individual tax returns in 2016. At that moment, I knew I had fallen in love with numbers and the tax preparation process.
Getting to know clients and understanding each individual’s situation was very important to me. Just to see a smile on their face meant a lot to me. In 2019 after being laid off, I decided to open my own tax preparation company. I opened the doors to my location in December of 2019.
I had a lot of support from family and friends. Explicit Financial Services LLC is Accredited By the Better Business Bureau and offers clients low affordable tax preparation. We also assist clients with notary Services and financial stability.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it wasn’t easy at all. Being a mother of three and maintaining a business was a huge challenge.
I had bad credit so I couldn’t obtain any business loans, so I had to take my savings to start Explicit Financial Services LLC and run day-to-day operations. Marketing strategies were also a hassle.
I spent a lot of money to market to brand my business. Just a little advice for someone starting a business just remember things can get hard but you have to stay consistent and miss out on fun sometimes.
When no one else believes in you, believe in yourself and never give up on your dreams.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is going to my mom’s business located in Orange Mound, TN.
My mom operated a tire shop for 20-plus years and that inspired me to become a successful woman. Just seeing her wake up and have a unique hustle was exciting.
