Exploring Life & Business with Jacob Farmer of Fetch! Pet Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Farmer.

Hi Jacob, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I left active duty Army in April of 2016 with no plan for what I wanted to do. I knew I needed a job, so I applied to LPN school, got in, and got my Associate in Registered Nurse. I had owned a candy store as a kid running out of my parents’ laundry room. My dad installed bars on the window so we could be safe doing it. I always wanted to work for myself, and nursing made this possible.

I contacted a Franchise consultant, and he presented me with several options, and I decided on Fetch! Pet Care for two reasons. One, I do not need a brick-and-mortar building, and two, because of being in the military and moving a lot, then travel nursing does not leave room for me to have a dog 24/7, so at least I could continue to help people.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh, it has not been a smooth road at all, and it’s still not smooth. I was working with a company that shall remain nameless, and I assume the company was used to working with big clients—people who were requiring loans of 150k or more. I only need approximately 80k for this. I went through the SBA loan process, and right at the end, they denied my loan and said I needed to wait six months to reapply. I did.

When I reapplied, I did the paper the way they approved it before and asked what I needed to fix on the other paperwork. They denied me again for the paperwork they had before approval and said I needed to wait 30 days. I immediately told them I would not do business with them again and found someone else. It took maybe 60 days to get approved, and here we are. The biggest problem now is finding customers.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Fetch! Pet Care is a nationwide pet sitter company. It is run mainly by franchise owners. I believe there are approximately 120 locations across the United States. We specialize in dog walking, medication administration, and pet sitting. What sets us apart from others in Memphis is that I live and have worked in this area. I am vested in making Memphis grow.

Whether this business succeeds or fails is on me. That being so, all of the sitters that work for Fetch must pass a background check. They have not contracted workers; we are licensed, bonded, and insured. You will get the same sitter unless there is an issue with the sitters’ schedule. Most of our sitters are going to school for something.

What matters most to you? Why?
As you can see from serving in the military, being a nurse, and now with Fetch! The last few years of my life have been about helping people. I did not set this course for myself; it just happened this way. I ran track at the University of Mississippi, and injury led me down this path, and here I am, helping pets now.
