Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Huckaby
Josh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My grandfather , Frank Liberto, originally started the place. After he shut it down, my grandmother Mary liberto ran it for years and closed it down after that it changed hands a few times. In 2011, it was available available again. At the time, I was an operation manager at Charlestown Races and Slots in West Virginia and decided to move back to Memphis to get The Green Beetle open as a restaurant and back in the family again.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a challenge securing funds to open up and no one really knew who I was since I had been living in West Virginia. The Beetle also didn’t have the greatest reputation from the different operations that had been there over the years.
It definitely took a lot of hard work and perseverance to get it where it is today and it still takes a lot of work to keep it thriving.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
When we first opened we were an Italian restaurant but we listened to the guests and the neighborhood and changed our menu up . We are currently known for our Beetle Burgers, Catfish, Big Willy Sandwich, and Bushwackers. We’re the only place in Memphis to serve Bushwackers. We are the oldest tavern in Memphis est in 1939
We also have a food truck and do catering.
