Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Edwards.
Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Memphis, TN. My interest in the medical field started at a young age due to my mom being a phlebotomist. Finding stethoscopes and syringes around the house piqued my interest. A few projects at my alma mater, Whitehaven High School, led me to research and narrow down my career options; I landed on becoming a Registered Nurse. Once I graduated high school, I enrolled at Tennessee State University.
After being accepted to the nursing program, I graduated and became licensed in 2015. My nursing career has carried me through many different specialties and cities over the years. However, I felt… incomplete. I felt as if I was suppressing another side of me. I had always had an interest in the beauty industry. I started taking cosmetology classes in high school but never finished because I was laser-focused on a “reliable” career; instead of going off interest. After noticing the boom in plastic surgery over the recent years and already having the skillset, I figured why not shift towards the medical aesthetics industry.
In 2020, while working in ICUs all over the country during a global pandemic, I decided to enroll in an Aesthetician school. I graduated from there at the end of 2021 and officially passed state boards at the beginning of 2022. I’m excited to make this pivot in my career and continue to provide excellent care to my community but in a different aspect!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t exactly been smooth. I wanted to be sure that the certifications I received were from reputable, professional sources. I also had a tough time finding an adequate space that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Tha Beauty Clinic is focused on becoming the best MedSpa in the Memphis area. Upon opening, we will be providing facial services, body contouring services, and Post-op care. We are currently in the process of training to administer neurotoxins and dermal fillers. I believe what sets us apart is that we are owned and operated by a 2 times state-licensed professional.
Being a licensed Registered Nurse and a licensed Aesthetician provides a unique set of skills and knowledge that I believe will benefit all future clients. I’m extremely proud to be a Memphis native bringing the knowledge and services I have back to my community.
I want to let the city know that they don’t have to travel to other cities for these premier services. Businesses are providing excellent service in our backyard.
Any big plans?
Well, this is kind of the first step for me. Just getting my business up and running. The major change on the horizon for us is flipping from non-invasive to an invasive medspa. Which includes services that are slightly more on the medical side like injections and medical-grade chemical peels.
