Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia D. Earl.
Hi Mia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As I reflect on my journey to becoming an entrepreneur, all I can say is that it was not my plan. I must be clear, although there were twists and turns along my path, I have had a wonderful journey. It was the blessings of prior years that stabilized me during my now eleven years of entrepreneurship.
I did what most are told to do: go to school, get a “good” job, and you will live a “good “life. Well, there is definitely more to life’s journey. I thought I was following the plan. I received my B.S., finished graduate school with a Master’s Public Health (MPH), and although I said I was done with school, I completed my PhD.
On my career path, I remember my first job after completing my MPH was stressful due to the nature of the job. I now believe God placed me there with the purpose of discovering an issue I had suppressed and was forced to deal with it on this path called life. My initial jobs were not in my field of choice however provided valuable experience that prepared me for the path God had for me in my field of health and wellness which I enjoyed. God had set me up …
On my path, I faced the talks of one company closing its doors, the politics of management, and the challenges of corporate America. With my passion for health and wellness and understanding the role that stress plays on the body, I started Abundant Life Wellness which provided stress management workshops with aromatherapy. I was determined that I would be true to my values and character. Management issues overtook the joy that came with helping others meet their health and wellness needs. I weathered the storm. Although salary was good, I was seeking a peace of mind and not a salary.
I began thinking long-term about my career path. God kept placing me in management positions. At this point, I had no desire to supervise people any longer. I wanted to do something with a hands-on approach. After several considerations with prayer and research, God laid out the path for his plan. I was introduced to reflexology. All I wanted was a good “foot rub”. With continued encounters with reflexology, it was beneficial to my own health and healing.
However, it was a year or so later when I made the connection that I prayed for something hands-on and God placed reflexology in my path which intertwined with my health education background and experience. I researched schools, trained and became certified as a reflexologist. I had no knowledge of where it would take me and at that time did not intend to pursue reflexology full time. I knew it was God’s plan because all lined up with scheduling training and completing certifications.
My vision was to one day work for myself to escape the harsh realities of corporate America. Well, that day came prematurely when the program I was managing at the time received word that it was phasing out and the positions would be eliminated. With a 30 day notice, I had little strength to seek another job. It was that day I made one of the best decisions of my life to launch my very own reflexology & wellness practice. As I went from employed to unemployed, my Heavenly Father clearly showed me that with trust and obedience provisions were made as I truly was not lacking anything. Abundant Life Wellness Solutions officially opened its doors January 2011.
With all of my years of education, I never thought my peace and prosperity would come from a hands-on approach of touching feet. (ha!) My passion and sincerity shows in what I do. I am asked frequently, “How do you touch others’ feet?” Or “Do you really enjoy what you do?” I continue to trust God in where he leads me on this journey of life and entrepreneurship.
I am grateful for everything that happened in my life because I believe it was God’s plan to mold me into the person I am today and give me the strength to endure the path of entrepreneurship. It is God’s purpose and path for my life to bring hope and healing through reflexology, wellness coaching, and other natural health modalities!
My Foundation:
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21 ESV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your path.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV)
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
1. Having a desire to help “everyone”- I wanted others to improve their health or circumstances more than they wanted it. I “gave away” services and attempted to convince others that they needed what I had to offer. I shifted my mindset. The services I offered were not for everyone. Those that valued my services would pay for it. My task is to educate others on what I have to offer and allow them to make an informed decision.
2. Trying to do it all alone: I had to utilize the expertise of others and trust others with bookkeeping.
3. Ineffective Communication– I had to speak facts and leave out personal emotions when it comes to business.
4. Fear of Failure – I had to trust my Heavenly Father. I saw myself as a servant and created an environment of caring and quality services.
5. Lack of Follow-up – Keep in touch with clients/customers. I learned it is okay to ask for business, schedule next appointment, and ask for referrals.
6. Lack of solid relationships – It is okay to know a lot of people, but dedicate time to building and nurturing those relationships. Don’t just know people to know them but remain close to those who will uplift, inspire and motivate you to be all you were created to be. Know that you have something to offer others and they have something to offer you as well.
7. Inconsistent Branding – I had to be consistent with your branding message. Build a brand of trust and respect. Be dependable. As an entrepreneur, it is my desire and mission to build a brand in which I am seen as the “go-to person”, an expert in my field.
