Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawandra Ford.
Hi Shawandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I didn’t come to yoga to teach poses — I came to heal.
I began my journey as a yoga teacher after experiencing the benefits of yoga in my own life. Teaching allowed me to build Brwnskn Yoga in Memphis, a community-centered practice grounded in accessibility, representation, and culturally responsive care. As my work grew, it became clear that students were seeking more than movement, they were seeking support for chronic illness, trauma, stress, and major life transitions.
That realization led me to yoga therapy.
As a certified Yoga Therapist, my work now focuses on individualized, evidence-informed care that addresses the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of each client. Through one-on-one and small group sessions, I integrate movement, breathwork, mindfulness, and lifestyle practices to support healing in ways that extend beyond the mat.
Today, Brwnskn Yoga operates at the intersection of healthcare, education, and community wellness, serving children, adults, and families across Memphis. This evolution hasn’t been about leaving teaching behind — it’s been about deepening the work and expanding access to therapeutic yoga as a tool for long-term, community-centered healing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating a wellness industry that often views yoga as a luxury rather than a therapeutic tool, especially when serving underserved communities. Transitioning from yoga teacher to certified yoga therapist also required significant time, financial investment, and boundary-setting while continuing to run a business and serve the community. These challenges ultimately strengthened my commitment to building sustainable, accessible, and credible models of healing through Brwnskn Yoga.
We’ve been impressed with Brwnskn Yoga, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Brwnskn Yoga is a community-centered wellness practice offering culturally responsive yoga therapy and accessible wellness programming across Memphis. I specialize in therapeutic yoga for individuals navigating chronic illness, stress, trauma, and life transitions, as well as school- and community-based programs for youth and families.
What sets Brwnskn Yoga apart is its integration of evidence-informed yoga therapy with cultural relevance and real-world accessibility. Wellness here isn’t one-size-fits-all or exclusive, it’s adaptive, intentional, and rooted in community care.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Brwnskn Yoga is recognized as a trusted space for healing, education, and empowerment. It’s more than a yoga brand, it’s a model for sustainable, community-driven wellness.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Looking ahead, I’m excited about continuing to expand how yoga is understood and applied in community and therapeutic spaces. I’m proud that my work has inspired others not only to teach, but to teach with intention, engaging yoga beyond the poses and using its principles as tools for healing and growth. The future of my work is rooted in depth, integrity, and meaningful impact.
