Exploring Life & Business with Taneka Johnson of Cultivate with Taneka Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taneka Johnson.

Hi Taneka, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has brought together 20 years of entrepreneurship, nine years in professional coaching, and more than 20 years of experience in training, development, and leadership. Across those experiences, a central thread has been helping people recognize their capabilities and turn them into meaningful results.

As my experience deepened, Cultivate evolved, expanding from individual coaching into organizational development, training, corporate wellness, and support for solopreneurs. Today, our mission is to help people and organizations grow with intention, navigate change with clarity, and build success that supports both their performance and well-being. That mission reflects my belief that how we achieve success matters just as much as what we achieve.

Today, I describe my work as a Human Performance Strategist. I help people and organizations examine what is keeping them stuck, make intentional decisions about what needs to change, and develop the capacity and strategies to move forward. My approach considers the whole person: their identity, mindset, well-being, responsibilities, and the environment in which they are trying to succeed.

Having served more than 250 clients, I have refined that approach into my Plateau–Pivot–Performance methodology. It brings structure to the work of navigating plateaus, making strategic pivots, and building sustainable performance. It also reflects a belief at the heart of Cultivate: meaningful growth requires both personal development and practical action.

Along the way, I was honored as the 2024 Advisor of the Year by Heels & Hustle and a 2023 G.E.M.S. Success Honoree by the Love Angel Foundation for my leadership in the community. Those recognitions are meaningful because they connect to the impact I want my work to have.

My own journey continues to involve reinvention. As Cultivate grows, I am bringing together everything I have learned about business, leadership, and human development to help people build success they can sustain—and lives they actually want to live.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. Over my nine years in the coaching and consulting space, I’ve had to navigate changes in the industry while also moving through transitions in my own life. There have been seasons when I was adjusting the direction of my business while also reassessing my priorities and what I had the capacity to give. Learning how to move forward without ignoring those realities has been an ongoing lesson.

Industry changes have challenged me to keep evaluating how I communicate my value and serve my clients. Experience doesn’t mean you can stop learning. You have to remain willing to listen, refine your approach, and recognize when something that worked before needs to change.

Another challenge has been learning to expand my services beyond my immediate environment. That takes more than making your work available to new people. It means understanding different needs, building relationships, and learning how to communicate the relevance of your expertise in rooms where no one knows you yet.

Building a reliable network and finding genuine support have also taken time. There’s a difference between knowing people and having relationships rooted in trust, follow-through, and mutual investment. Professionally, you need people who open doors, share knowledge, and honor their commitments. Personally, you need people who care about you beyond what you produce or accomplish.

Having those elements in place makes the journey more manageable. The challenges still come, but you have stronger relationships, clearer direction, and more support to help you work through them. One of my biggest lessons has been that building a sustainable business also means building the support around you to sustain yourself.

As you know, we’re big fans of Cultivate with Taneka Johnson. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Cultivate with Taneka Johnson is a consulting and education business focused on human performance, organizational development, and strategic reinvention. As its founder and a Human Performance Strategist, I help individuals, entrepreneurs, and organizations understand what is limiting their progress, determine what needs to change, and put practical strategies in place to move forward.

My work brings together my background in industrial-organizational psychology, training and development, leadership, and entrepreneurship. I’m particularly interested in the relationship between people and the environments in which they work. A person can be capable and committed while operating within expectations, routines, or systems that make it difficult to succeed. My approach considers both the person and those conditions.

For individuals, that might mean navigating a career transition, reconsidering a long-held definition of success, or learning how to pursue a new direction while honoring existing responsibilities. For a solopreneur, it could mean clarifying the direction of their business, strengthening how they operate, or making decisions about what to continue, change, or release. Within an organization, the work may involve leadership development, communication, employee learning, or wellness strategies that support people in doing their work effectively.

At the center of Cultivate is my Plateau–Pivot–Performance methodology. It provides a structure for examining where progress has stalled, identifying an intentional change in direction, and developing the practices and conditions that support sustainable performance. A plateau deserves investigation. Sometimes a person needs a new skill or a clearer strategy. Other times, their goals have changed, their responsibilities have expanded, or the way they have been working no longer fits. Understanding that distinction helps us choose a more useful path forward.

What sets my approach apart is the way I connect personal development with practical execution. If someone says they want to become a stronger leader, we look at what that means in their everyday behavior: how they communicate expectations, make decisions, delegate, and handle difficult conversations. If an entrepreneur wants growth, we examine whether their services, systems, and capacity can support it. I want the insights people gain through our work to become changes they can recognize in their lives and businesses.

Cultivate’s offerings include individual coaching and strategy sessions, group experiences such as Pivot Lab, workshops, speaking, and consulting. For businesses and organizations, my work includes training and development solutions, leadership development, and corporate wellness strategies. Small business education is also an important part of the brand, especially helping solopreneurs develop the skills and infrastructure to support their growth.

I also share ideas through my publication, Rewired Alchemy, where I explore identity, human performance, work, leadership, and reinvention. Writing gives me space to examine the questions people often carry privately: What happens when the work you built no longer fits? How do you make a meaningful change when other people depend on you? What does success look like when your priorities evolve?

What I’m most proud of is that Cultivate has continued to evolve while keeping people at the center. Having served more than 250 clients, I value the opportunity to help people think more clearly about their circumstances, recognize their options, and take ownership of their next steps. I’m proud to be building a brand that makes room for ambition, well-being, and the realities of people’s lives.

Above all, I want readers to know that Cultivate is a place where growth can be both intentional and practical. Our mission is to help people and organizations grow with intention, navigate change with clarity, and build success that supports both their performance and well-being. That is the standard I want every part of the brand to reflect.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I would say self-awareness—the willingness to be honest with myself about who I am, what I want, and what needs to change. It influences how I make decisions, respond to challenges, and define success.

Over the years, I’ve learned to ask myself difficult questions: Am I continuing in this direction because it still makes sense, or because I’ve invested so much in it? Does this opportunity align with the life and business I want to build? Do I need to develop a skill, ask for support, or give myself permission to choose differently? Being willing to sit with those questions has helped me become more intentional about where I put my energy.

That self-awareness also helps me adapt. I have experienced seasons when my industry changed, my responsibilities shifted, or a previous way of working no longer fit. Recognizing those changes allows me to respond thoughtfully and make decisions that reflect both my goals and my capacity.

It shapes how I serve people, too. I have to recognize my own assumptions, listen carefully, and remain open to learning. My experience gives me a foundation, but each person and organization brings circumstances that deserve to be understood.

For me, success requires the willingness to examine my own patterns and take responsibility for what I do next. That is something I continue to practice, and it is central to the work I do through Cultivate.
