Today we’d like to introduce you to Trina Allen-Johnson.
Hi Trina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For years, I had tried several times to attend cosmetology school. But because I had the task of caring for my mother and son who needed continuous care I was never able to finish. I also didn’t realize it at the time but I didn’t really want to do regular hair like relaxers and things of that nature. At that time natural hair wasn’t as popular and there were no classes or schools for it. My mother had always had issues with her hair due to her illness and all the medications she was on. I always wanted to find a way to help her but never could.
It wasn’t until her passing in November of 2018 that I finally realized what I wanted to do and the way I could help others that had the issues as my mom. So I enrolled in natural hair school. My son was still dealing with his health issues and I was scared to death that I would start school once again and something would happen and once again I would not be able to finish. But this time felt different, it felt like this was where God was leading me. So I prayed and asked God that if this was his will and the direction that he wanted me to take that he would allow me to go and finish this time. And sure enough, he answered my prayers.
I went to school every day and missed not one. That’s when I knew that this would be the beginning of a new journey. I wanted to do more than just hair though. I wanted to be able to help those that were suffering from hair loss and scalp issues as well. So I started taking classes to formulate my own hair and skin products. Products that would be all-natural and chemical-free. Once I learned and developed my products I decided to start what’s known as Minnie Sue Rx. It’s a holistic scalp, hair, and skin regime using the products that I make to help with hair loss and certain skin conditions.
I must admit that this was not easy. It’s been a long hard road. I’ve worked in a couple of different salons and for one reason or another it just never seemed to work out. So after moving around from salon to salon and not wanting to work for someone else on a commission basis, I decided to step out on faith and go out on my own. That’s when I decided to open Minnie’s Natural Hair Lounge. Minnie’s Natural Hair Lounge is not just another salon. It’s somewhere where you can come and relax and take your mind off your worries while getting your hair done in a quaint spa-like environment. Minnie’s Natural Hair Lounge provides you with a variety of relaxing music, hot towels, relaxing steam shampoos, refreshments, and free wi-fi.
It’s a place where you can talk, be in total silence, or just let calm smooth jazz sounds take you away. Minnie’s Natural Hair Lounge is also focused on starting work within the community to provide services and support to those in need. I started Minnie’s Natural Hair Lounge in honor of my mother to be able to touch the hearts and lives of people with the same loving and caring spirit that she did. I want people to know that Minnie’s Natural Hair Lounge is not just a hair salon but a place of peace and tranquility.
This is not just a job for me and it’s not just about doing hair. For me, this is a ministry that God has given me to hopefully be a blessing to my clients and community as they are a blessing to me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have faced many obstacles from no one would support me and not having a single client for months. Going from salon to salon. To finally thinking I was in the right place doing ok and thinking things were good and suddenly being told that you now have to go on commission and give 40%.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Minnie’s Natural Hair Lounge?
Minnie’s Natural Hair Lounge is a natural hair salon that specializes in all phases of natural hair as well as traditional locs, micro locs, and my signature “Minnie locs.” I’m also certified in Medical Non-Surgical Hair Replacement and Restoration. We also have our own handmade all-natural organic products which we use in our Minnie Sue Rx program which is a holistic scalp, hair, and skin regime. Our products are customized for each client’s specific needs and conditions.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about the city is definitely the southern cuisine. What I like least about the city is everything closes early.
