The braids were small, the job time-consuming, and it became clear that a service like this simply didn’t exist. That experience stuck with me. I thought, There has to be a better way—and I can create it.
That was my lightbulb moment.
I woke up one morning, looked at my husband, and said, “Let’s do it.” That same day, we began laying the foundation for what would become The TakeDown Bar—a dedicated space where people could come for professional, gentle, and luxurious takedown services for braids and extensions.
In our first month, we serviced just 10 clients—but we celebrated every single one of them. For us, it’s not just about the numbers; it’s about impact. We knew there were others out there who had felt the same frustration and isolation I had experienced, and we were determined to be part of the solution.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all—it’s been a journey full of learning curves and resilience. Starting The Takedown Bar came from recognizing a real need in the beauty industry, but turning that idea into a thriving business wasn’t easy. One of the biggest challenges was educating people about the importance of professional takedown services. Many clients didn’t realize how much damage can happen during a rushed or improper takedown, so building awareness was key.
There were also logistical hurdles, like finding the right team who understood both the technical skill and the care that this kind of work requires. And of course, like any startup, balancing costs while trying to grow and maintain quality was a constant challenge. But every obstacle pushed us to be more creative, more intentional, and more committed to creating a space where people feel seen, cared for, and confident in their hair journey.
