Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Yadron.
Hi Camille, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Like most people the road to where I am now wasn’t a straight path and definitely not simple. I’m not the person who knew they wanted to be a photographer nor was given a camera at a young age and knew this was it. I fell into photography, picked up the camera, started running, and haven’t stopped since.
I always thought growing up I was the “weird girl”, I know now that I was just a little alternative and quirky. Within navigating growing up as the alternative girl in the 90’s and 20’s I always had a love for “being creative” DIY projects, design, and creating. Around 2010 I started following a wedding planner/interior decorator in Grand Rapids via her blog and later Instagram. She inspired me to give planning and decor a shot.
In 2012 I decided to make a website to advertise private events and decor I’d done. I had plans to take photos of my work and go from there. Instead of hiring a photographer I went the DIY route and bought a Nikon D5000 crop sensor camera and the kit lens. After the camera arrived I asked friends and had them ask their friends if anyone would be willing to let me take photos of them for my site. Because in my mind if I wanted to get into the wedding industry I needed photos of couples and events I’d done.
From there it snowballed. More people were requesting sessions and I started charging for sessions and weddings. I advertised on Groupon for a while as well as interned under and worked for other photographers to learn as much as I could about shooting weddings. Fast forward 10 years, and things look different in the best way. Camille Leigh Photography has a growing team and we’re actively working to expand to other markets to show prospective clients the CLP experience. We’ve been recognized in several major magazines such as Southern Bride, Munaluchi, Black Bride 1998, and B Collective. This past fall I had the opportunity to be honored as one of the Top 40 Under 40 Urban Elite Professionals in Memphis TN.
We specialize in curating a comfortable environment for anyone who steps in front of our camera. Through thorough communication and a fun, laid-back environment we destigmatize what people believe about their ability to take photos and instead, encourage them to get past their own fears and hang-ups to create lasting memories while having a good time doing it.
Behind the camera, CLP’s focus is looking toward the future and teaching the next group of photographers and leaders. Through mentorships and hands-on training, we work with those seeking to do something more than just take photos. Whoever has the ambition to develop their skills and serve others, those are the people we want to lead.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Through each season of my career, the struggles varied depending on what level I was at and the goals I had to meet. Like other creatives, I struggled with setting boundaries with clients, having clear communication, and structure. The biggest struggle has definitely been the business side of having your own business. Wearing every single had and knowing when to take that hat off and give it to someone else so I can use my set of skills where it is better needed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Camille Leigh Photography?
What we’re most proud of is our working with clients showing them that taking photos doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, it can be pretty fun! You’d be surprised how great you can photograph with proper direction and a friendly face behind the lens to cheer you on. We’re known for making awkward beautiful. This and making the experience a huge part of our core values is what sets us apart from others.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Definitely always have had a desire to learn and give our clients a better experience. Through education, constant practice, and mentorships when possible we’re always heavily investing back into the business.
