Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Ross.
Hi Jaime, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My husband, Billy, and I purchased an existing pool maintenance business in 2024, now operating as Pool Scouts of the Mid-South.
Since then, our focus has been on building something more than just a maintenance company. We’ve worked to elevate the level of service our customers receive while expanding our offerings to better meet their needs. In addition to weekly cleaning and seasonal openings and closings, we’ve added repair services and pool inspections for real estate transactions. Looking ahead, we are continuing to grow with the addition of leak detection and liner replacement services.
What excites us most is the growth and potential of the business. We’ve been intentional about creating a full-service experience for our customers, so they don’t have to juggle multiple companies to take care of their pool.
At the end of the day, we take pride in delivering quality work and making sure our customers feel taken care of. That’s what drives us, and that’s what we’re continuing to build.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No business runs perfectly, and ours is no exception. We’ve experienced our share of ups and downs over the years. One of the biggest challenges has been finding and retaining dependable employees. Like most service-based businesses, staffing can make or break your operations.
That said, we’ve also been fortunate. We’ve built a strong core team, including several seasonal employees who return year after year. That consistency has been a huge asset to our growth and service quality.
Currently, we operate year-round with 2–3 technicians and 1–2 office staff. During peak summer months, we scale up by bringing on approximately five additional technicians to meet demand.
As you know, we’re big fans of Pool Scouts of The Mid-South. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a locally owned and operated franchise serving West Tennessee and North Mississippi, specializing in full-service pool care for residential homeowners. Our services include seasonal pool openings and closings, routine weekly maintenance, and equipment repairs and upgrades.
At the core of what we do, we’re the “pool boys in the backyard” — the team you trust to show up, take care of everything, and keep your pool ready to enjoy. But behind that simple idea is a highly systemized, professional operation built on consistency, training, and attention to detail.
One of the biggest things that sets us apart is our commitment to service and the systems we’ve built to support it. Everything we do is designed with checks and balances to ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for every customer. From technician processes to internal communication, we’ve created a structure that holds our team accountable and keeps standards high.
We aim to deliver exceptional service every time. And while we’re human and no company is perfect, our systems are designed to catch issues quickly, often before the customer even notices. And when something does need attention, our Scout Guarantee ensures we make it right — no questions asked.
We’re especially proud of the relationships we’ve built with our clients. Many return year after year because they know we communicate clearly, show up when we say we will, and stand behind our work.
At the end of the day, our goal is simple: be the dependable team in your backyard so you can spend more time enjoying your pool and less time worrying about it.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If you’re just starting out, understand this: your business will only be as strong as your systems and your people.
Have a plan, yes. Know your numbers, absolutely. But what I wish I understood earlier is how critical it is to build structure from day one. Processes, expectations, and accountability matter more than motivation. Motivation fades. Systems scale.
Also, hiring will be one of your biggest challenges. Finding good, dependable people is hard, and keeping them is even harder. When you do find great employees, invest in them, take care of them, and build your business around them.
And finally, take care of your customers. That sounds simple, but most businesses don’t do it consistently. Communicate well, show up when you say you will, and own your mistakes. If you do those things, you’ll stand out quickly.
It’s not always smooth, but if you stay consistent, build the right systems, and treat people the right way, you’ll give yourself a real shot at long-term success.
