Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Munsell
Hi Megan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Entrepreneurship is in my blood. My mother was an entrepreneur, and her parents were entrepreneurs who had a variety of businesses from restaurants to hotels. My maternal great-grandmother was also a renaissance woman, owning land at a time where that wasn’t really a thing. My CPA firm is not the first foray into entrepreneurship that I’ve ever had – I’ve also had an eBay store, blog, Etsy store, and online consulting gigs.
Entrepreneurship is often portrayed as flashy cars, luxury homes, and endless time freedom, but the reality is far different. From a young age, I understood that building something special sometimes means burning the candle at both ends. My mother made multiple six figures per year in revenue building home decor items in the mini factory in our backyard. This required lots of hours of work, sacrifice, and dedication.
One thing that I noticed that bothered me was that my mother, grandparents, and great-grandmother didn’t have access to solid advice, and their accountants mainly just filed taxes without offering actionable insights on growing or scaling a business. So, I chose accounting to help support and guide the family business.
I worked up to three jobs at a time and started investing in real estate during my senior year of college. I graduated in 4 years, and got my first job out of college at a Memphis accounting firm. I found the ad in the classified section of the newspaper. Oh, how times have changed.
After spending a few years in public accounting, I moved into the corporate sector. I continued growing my real estate portfolio and I even had several small businesses on the side – ranging from eBay resale stores to online consulting gigs. I was always doing my own tax planning, and planning for a few real estate investors that were impressed with what I was able to accomplish.
I set out to start a tax and bookkeeping firm in 2014, and had to put it on the backburner during a nasty divorce and a couple years of being a single mom of a kiddo with autism. Looking back, I am glad I had ten more years of corporate experience as it really set me up to help with more complex businesses. It’s from that time where I really embraced the mantra “things don’t happen TO me, they happen FOR me.”
In September 2022 I was upgraded to First Class on an Air France flight to Paris. After that experience, I did a lot of introspection and realized that in order to live a big, memorable life I need to do the big memorable things I dreamed about. I set out to start a virtual business, and the rest is history. I’ve been full time self employed since March of 2024, and I’ve also started writing and public speaking. The best is truly yet to come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I love to lift weights and run. One of the reasons that I think I have chosen those hobbies is because they are hard. When any given day includes doing something that is hard, and you survive that hard thing feeling stronger – you build the confidence you need to succeed in things like entrepreneurship.
This is important to mention, because how we do one thing is how we do all things. From the outside looking in, it appears that I had it easy. I got a college degree in 4 years. I have rental property. I worked for some of the largest companies in the world, and have experience at the senior leadership level. I built my own business to over 6 figures in revenue in less than 12 months.
I have been able to do these things because I am used to putting in the reps, so to speak. I have a son with autism, which gave me the skills of patience and the ability to explain things in multiple ways. I had a high-conflict divorce and lost most of my net worth after pouring my blood, sweat, and tears into building up a large real estate portfolio. I’ve experienced income decreases, unexpected bills, and I’ve invested money into things that didn’t work out the way I would have liked them to. This allows me to really empathize with a client going through a hard financial time.
Through all this, though, I have been shaped to be an incredibly resilient, patient, and resourceful person. I would not be like this had my road been an easy one to travel. I can also guide clients in a unique way, since I can pull from my lived experience.
We’ve been impressed with Abundantia Advisory, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Abundantia Advisory is the premiere accounting firm for a luxury accounting experience. Instead of seeing your CPA one time per year (and leaving in tears), we provide year-round guidance and support that help you meet your personal and business financial goals.
What really sets us apart from a lot of the other accounting firms is that we are very passionate about helping businesses make the world a better place. We don’t cut corners by jam packing our calendar, hiring overseas consultants for pennies on the dollar, or using AI without a lot of human verification and monitoring behind it.
I am very proud that I have been able to bring this luxury experience not only to the monthly clients who have invested in 1:1 services, but also to those who understand the value of these services yet don’t have the budget. For them, we integrate the luxury feel into done-with-you services and even tax prep as a standalone. We really meet our clients where they are at, and provide them with solutions to move their business forward.
Our services are designed to meet you where you are in your business journey:
Fractional CFO Packages: Tailored to your specific needs and designed for multi-seven figure businesses, these packages provide outsourced CFO support, full accounting and budgeting services. In this package we can explore your financial tech stack, determine which key performance indicators that will help you plan for the future, and also keep you in compliance come tax time.
Mid-Level Advisory Packages: Perfect for multi-six-figure entrepreneurs, these are a “light” version of the full CFO package and include monthly bookkeeping, tax strategy, and tax preparation—everything you need to stay on top of your finances.
Group Program: Ideal for business owners who prefer a hands-on approach, this program guides you through your own bookkeeping while providing the added benefit of done-for-you tax preparation.
A La Carte Tax Preparation: For those with a solid financial rhythm who simply need a reliable CPA for tax prep, we offer affordable standalone services to fit your needs. We also provide this service to real estate investors and individuals.
No matter where you are, we have a solution to help you gain clarity, confidence, and control over your finances!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a child, I was always curious and learning. I had my nose stuck in a book, and you could usually find me in my room writing short stories or reading The Baby Sitter’s Club. As a teen, I played the oboe and even traveled to New York City and played at Carnegie Hall with the Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra. I haven’t played the oboe in years, but it is something I really want to take up again, if I can find a horn that I am happy with.
I was bubbly and precocious. I went above and beyond, and typically got good grades. I also worked hard in the family business and earned money towards buying my back to school clothes every year. I’ve always had an excellent work ethic and huge dreams. I recently found a poem I wrote for a high school English class that talked about making one-hundred thousand dollars per year, and living in the city.
