Hidden Gems: Meet Monique Clemons of Balm Haus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Clemons.

Hi Monique, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a small town near Dallas, Texas, where my curiosity about skincare first began. In high school, I found myself fascinated by Dr. Pimple Popper videos, and at the same time, I was dealing with my own skin challenges. That combination sparked what would eventually become a deep passion for skincare and helping others feel confident in their skin.

After graduating high school, I moved to another small town near Houston to attend Prairie View A&M University, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Health. Not long after completing my degree, I followed my heart and pursued an esthetics certification, from Ogle School, to deepen my knowledge and turn my passion into a career.

Once I was certified, I hit the ground running—applying to every esthetician job I could find in the Houston area. But instead of doors opening, I was met with a series of rejection letters. People questioned whether I was ready, doubted my abilities, and some even told me outright that I shouldn’t start my career yet. Over time, the constant opinions and second-guessing from others became overwhelming. I felt discouraged and, honestly, tired of letting other people’s doubts shape my decisions.

That mindset shifted after a trip to Memphis, Tennessee. I met someone who had taken a similar leap of faith and changed the trajectory of their life, and our conversation really resonated with me. Visiting the Lorraine Motel and learning about the stories behind it also moved me deeply. It reminded me of the strength in following your convictions, even when the path isn’t clear.

I didn’t know exactly what life would look like stepping into the role of full-time CEO, but I knew in my heart—and through the strength passed down from my mother and my faith in God—that it was the right move. So I did it and Balm Haus was born.

That’s my story—and I’m sticking to it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve always been told, “If it were easy, everyone would do it.” And that’s stuck with me. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced on this journey has been maintaining mental clarity.

Currently, I’m a full-time teacher, navigating the emotions of young teenagers—while still being relatively young myself. Guiding them, helping them see the bigger picture behind what they’re going through, often feels like trying to lead a horse to water. But in some moments, I’ve managed to help them see—and that’s when I know I’m making an impact.

As someone who leads with passion, I’ve found that teaching can be emotionally draining. It demands immense patience. While I’m not a parent yet, I often imagine the added weight of managing family responsibilities on top of everything else I’m pursuing.

Beyond the classroom, there are challenges that come with balancing adult life—navigating workplace dynamics, managing personal relationships, experiencing loss, and adjusting to life’s constant changes—all while keeping focused on the bigger goal.

But I wasn’t raised to give up. I’ve never doubted that nothing in this world can stop what God has planned for me. The future He’s promised is already mine—I’m just walking in faith to get there.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is spending long summer days with my grandparents. They are, without a doubt, some of the best people I’ve ever known. The love they’ve poured into me is the reason I carry so much love in my heart today. Their constant support and encouragement taught me the importance of showing myself grace—especially in moments of defeat. Their influence has shaped not only who I am, but how I care for others.
